DO OUR READERS KNOW YOU EXIST? “This is about taking the time to build relationships with those people who matter the most —the people who do your work, look after your machinery and care for your customers,” says Daniel. “These are guys that if we treat them right there is every reason to believe they will be with us in twenty years time, or perhaps fifty years time.” Classifying itself as a timber ‘re-manufacturer’ Cleland Timber buys sawn timber from the mills, predominantly processing that timber into engineered timber products and for the last 20 years has specialised in finger jointing radiata pine. “We manufacture finger jointed, treated and primed exterior products such as weatherboards, fascia, along with ‘appearance’ grade radiata pine products in clears and dressing grades, selling to all major merchant chains throughout the North Island. “There are normally two or three different grades you can buy from the merchant. “Finger jointed will be the most expensive because it has been engineered and more stable.” In recent times there has been substantial growth in the manufacture of doorjambs and window reveals for aluminium joinery manufacturers and thirty percent of production is exported to Australia — mainly in the form of structural laminated posts and beams. Reflecting on business in the new world of Covid, Daniel says that any business currently engaged in the construction industry is likely to be doing well, and Cleland Timber is no different. “We’re in a phase where things are as busy as I’ve ever seen in twenty years in the industry. “I think that’s the general demand for construction, driven partly by the housing shortage, but also by people’s inability to use their money for travel and putting that into their homes. “We’re seeing that in all western countries.
