T T to page 54 Bordered by the Ruahine Forest Park to the east, the Whanganui National Park to the west and sitting on the doorstep of the coast and the majestic Rangitkei River— Marton is the heart of rural Rangitikei. Home to a population of just over 5000, Marton is the largest township in the Rangitikei with several large corporates choosing to base their businesses in the town. With business comes growth and Marton’s newest subdivision, Hereford Heights, is a clear reflection of the town’s growth and the need to provide land and housing. On the corner of Hereford Street and Bredins Line, the 8-hectare subdivision is a stones throw from Marton’s main street while its southern boundaries are delightfully rural. At the heart of Hereford Heights is Rangitikei Development Ltd, while the energy and passion behind Rangitikei Development comes from long time friends and locals Bain Simpson and Hayden Gould. A local sheep and beef farmer and a helicopter pilot respectively, Hereford Heights is Bain and Hayden’s first subdivision project. “I could see there was a shortage of land available for housing in the central region and I knew it had to happen in our area at some stage,” says Bain. “That’s when Gouldy and I formed Rangitikei Development. With us being able to offer good sections at reasonable prices that probably created additional demand on top of the fact there already was a shortage.” With its roots stretching back 85 years, Wanganui’s McDonald Concrete has a rich, colourful history and continues to be a 100% New Zealand owned family business proudly serving its community. Founded by Water Larsen in 1932, the business was forged on the simple philosophy of o ering quality products at a fair price—a philosophy that has stood the test if time and never changed. Innovation has always been the company’s bedrock, starting with Walter’s vision to build round houses made of concrete on a commercial scale. Highly futuristic for the day, the dream never came to fruition. An example of Walter’s round-house can be found in Gonville Avenue, Wanganui where Walter originally had his business making concrete fence posts, concrete house piles and troughs. But out of failure came success and the process Walter devised was used to construct thousands of storage sheds with a water tank on top, which was incorporated into the State Housing design of the time. Back in those days Walter sent gangs of men away to work in other towns. The tanks were poured on site and the men would work their way along the street. Examples of many of the structures can still be found in the backyards of these homes to-day. In 1992 Pamela and Ian McDonald 85 years of quality service purchased Walter Larsen & Sons Ltd, revitalizing the business and product lines while investing in new moulds designed by Ian that are now widely used throughout the industry. Rebranding as McDonald Concrete Group (MCG) Ltd, Ian and Pamela have continued the tradition of innovation with products like a 25,000 litre lat-top tank that can be completely buried underground and a 10,000 litre underground tanks for rainwater recycling systems on town sections. “We’ve also developed wastewater treatment systems, larger stock troughs suitable to serve two paddocks, feedlots either half or full, feedlot nibbing and residential and farm e luent systems,” says Ian. Now o ering a wide range of civil drainage products including concrete spun pipe and manholes, wingwalls, lids and associated products, MCG were delighted to work with Rangitikei Development on its subdivision project in Marton. “It has been great to have the opportunity to supply local product to a local development. Concrete is a proven material that has stood the test of time. MCG o er complete services for water storage, rainwater harvesting, concrete pipes and manholes, green solutions for sewage and wastewater treatment and precast services.” MCG has a large modern 3,800sqm facility on a 4.8hectare site and can arrange delivery New Zealand wide.
