Natural Pet Food Group PETFOOD INDUSTRY The Natural Pet Food Group is bringing ethically sourced New Zealand wholefood ingredients to the pet food world with its natural high meat pet nutrition, K9 Natural, Feline Natural, and Meat Mates providing pets with the energy and gut health they need to thrive. Founded by police dog handler Geoff Bowers in Christchurch in 2006, the Natural Pet Food Group pet foods are a nutritionally balanced combination of free-range meat from happy grass-fed and pasture raised animals, the finest seafood from sustainable sources, eggs from cage free chickens, fruits and vegetables grown in fertile New Zealand soils, vitamins, minerals, and oils. Even more important is what isn’t in the products, which are all grain, gluten, GMO, dairy, rice, potato, and filler free. The Natural Pet Food Group CEO Neil Hinton says when a feline or a wolf eats in the wild, it goes for the superfood nutrients of meat, offal, blood, bone, and hair. “So it made sense to Geoff to base a dog’s diet on that of a wolf,” he says. “Dogs and cats are obligate carnivores, and will do much better when they’re fed meat containing natural fat and protein, rather than the high carbohydrate-based diets the large scale commercial pet foods offer.” Neil says there is now some great science to support what the Natural Pet Food Group is doing, and high meat pet diets are a growing movement around the world. Neil says grain and starch-based kibbles are wrapped in meat flavours so cats and dogs think they’re getting meat, but what they’re really getting is high carbohydrates that worsen inflammatory joint conditions, skin irritations and hot spots, weeping eyes, and digestive issues. “One of the nicest differences our food makes is in what comes out the other end. Because a cat or dogs gut is designed to digest our diets, what comes out the other end is much smaller, firmer, and also smells a lot less. The best sign of getting the gut health right is what comes out the other end. A number of our happy customers have told us not only has this improved their dogs life, but also made the pick up a lot less unpleasant.” The Natural Pet Food Company has experienced incredible growth in the past five years and continues to grow in markets all over the world. And while it’s doing a great job for New Zealand pet food, it is also doing a great job communicating to the world the benefits of the wider New Zealand meat industry. Neil says the New Zealand pastural grassfed meat story is a strong one for The Natural Pet Food Company. “There are nutritional benefits linked to grass-fed meat rather than grain-fed or grain-finished meat. “Grass-fed meat has lower omega-6 and higher omega-3 relative to grain-fed meat, which helps to reduce inflammatory conditions. America doesn’t have it and Australia can’t guarantee it, so it is a real advantage for “There are nutritional benefits linked to grass-fed meat rather than grain-fed or grain-finished meat.” New Zealand. Our rolling hills are a real selling point for our product, and we’re able to tell the story far better than New Zealand meat companies can, given the retail real estate our packaging has versus New Zealand meat exported for human consumption.” Cold Storage • Chilled and Ambient Storage • Import Services "First in Cold First in Service" 17-19 Goodfellow Place, Frankton, Hamilton, Waikato, New Zealand 07 949 9830 or 021 877 641 • Hamilton@firstcold.co.nz
