There have also been productivity gains though thanks to new technology and planting systems, which has seen production rise. Lesley predicts that although there was an increase in new land planted before Covid-19 that this will slow in the near future. Jono says that the strength of the Mt Erin brand has also been highlighted this year. “Our brand is becoming more recognised and trusted. We’ve built a very good reputation and the advantage of that is that in the tough times it is easier to get sales,” he says. Lesley says the regional economy in Hawke’s Bay, where the group is based, is dependent on businesses such as Mt Erin Group. “The apple industry was on track to reach $1b in sales in 2022 and $2b by 2030. Around 70% of that fruit is grown in Hawkes Bay.” Lesley and Jono say that Mt Erin Group has continued with investment plans including a $4m refurbishment of its packhouse signifying a strong commitment to the future and playing its part in keeping the regional economy strong.
