KB Gleeson Building: House of the Year Awards BUILDING The kitchen, by Greytown’s Mano Joinery, is one of the most stunning Kieran has ever seen installed. A focal point for the home, this is a modern interpretation of the classical country kitchen, with paneled drawer fronts, contemporary materials, a large scullery, and recessed coffee machine hutch for an elegant, timeless, and personal design. Pitched ceilings in the living space create shape, definition, and height, and make great use of space as the ceiling lifts up into the roof cavity. Clean and crisp white walls allow the owners’ multitude of artworks to pop from the walls, and their contemporary furnishings to tell their own story. Many of the rooms lead on to the expansive, wrap around, hardwood deck, creating indoor-outdoor flow from every area of the home. Natural light filters through many skylights throughout the home, and thermally broken joinery and upgraded insulation helped KB Gleeson Building to win the Lifestyle Award for Sustainable Excellence as well as its Gold, Regional Category, and Top 100 Gold Reserve Awards at the Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards 2020. This was KB Gleeson Building’s first ever entry into the House of the Year competition, although Kieran has been involved in award-winning projects while working for other building companies. He was encouraged to enter but wasn’t too sure, and now he isn’t looking back. “For me it’s a recognition of the hard work we put in, and a reassurance that what we do as a company, we are doing it right,” he says. “We’re delivering a quality product, and having these award proves we’re doing it to a high standard.” KB Gleeson Building works throughout the Wairarapa, mainly the southern Wairarapa, and Kieran says it is booming on the building front. “It feels like we’re playing catch up from the last few decades,” he says. “It’s full on trying to manage the work load, to grow with it sustainably, and to continue to achieve what we set out to achieve. “We have to have a good team that’s able to do the work to the quality we want.” KB Gleeson Building uses local subcontractors and the materials for this award-winning project is mostly New Zealand-sourced product from Greytown ITM, apart from the hardwood decking, front of wall fittings, and Italian marble tiles. The weatherboards are sustainably sourced pine from New Zealand, and the carpets are pure New Zealand wool. PROUDLY SUPPORTING KB GLEESON BUILDING
