Planit Construction: House of the Year Awards BUILDING Ten years of entries and eight supreme awards at the Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards has Wellington’s Planit Construction firmly established as one of the best building companies in the region. Planit Construction has earned a total of 52 House of the Year awards, and the company is defined by its dedication to producing outstanding work. Two supreme awards were brought home from the 2020 Wellington/Wairarapa competition, Supreme New Home Over $2 million, and Supreme Renovation over $1 million. Planit Construction co-owner Greg Parish says the new home in Mount Victoria is a beautiful new home, in keeping with the historical streetscape but super high-spec, and the renovation project, which also won both bathroom and kitchen lifestyle awards and the craftsmanship award, is an absolutely outstanding house which is also a passive house. “And that was difficult to achieve,” Greg says. “We did the blower door test and exceeded the passive limits, but with architectural features like sliding doors it’s what I would call an architectural passive house.” On this renovation project, Planit Construction insulated the walls and ceilings then wrapped them with INTELLO, the internal airtightness system. Timber beams were placed on top of the wrap then services, pipes, and wires run in that cavity. This results in a wall around the perimeter of the home with no penetrations at all. A slow process that initially costs time, money, and product, but saves energy and resources for the lifespan of the home. Planit Construction also landscaped the exterior of the renovation project, including fencing, with Greg saying his company touched every millimetre of the property. He says it was cleverly designed by Parsonson Architects, as a south facing property looking towards the Botanical Gardens, two new floors were added to capture the morning sun and extensive views. The award-wining kitchen is a highlight, flanked by a courtyard on one side, the external cedar cladding wraps from outside through to the kitchen’s back wall and huge island. All of the home’s original rimu flooring was removed, sanded and oiled, and relayed. The award-wining new home at Mt Victoria has been mistaken for a renovation project, so fitting is it with the neighbouring properties in the historic suburb. Covering up to 70% of its site, with single street access in and out, there wasn’t a lot of room to move on this project. Initial site preparation had to include a retaining wall to prevent the neighbouring house from falling on to the building site, and a 100-year old Pohutukawa tree on the northern corner of the property had to be built around. A twin-gabled villa with large sash windows, heat-treated white Accoya weatherboards on the upper levels and a contrasting dark grey rendered plaster on the lower level achieves a compatibility with neighbouring properties. All the modern conveniences can be found within, from insulation 250mm thick, to double glazing, to smart wiring, to acoustic panelling, to a green roof off the deck facing the city.
