94 | NZ Proud: House of the Year Awards BUILDING Stunning renovation setting the bar T Kelly Deeks All major parts of the house have been upgraded including aluminium joinery, new bathroom and en-suite, kitchen, and every other room in the house. Striving to deliver the highest quality of building standards, Kapiti renovation and extension specialist NZ Proud Property Improvements is setting the bar for the industry with qualified carpenters and exceptional workmanship helping to build better homes for New Zealanders. Taking home a regional category win, a gold award, and a top 100 award in the renovations up to $500,000 category of the 2020 Wellington/Wairarapa Registered Master Builders House of the Year awards for the complete transformation of a coastal home shows NZ Proud is achieving its aim. “It’s incredibly gratifying,” says NZ Proud director Johnnie Saunders. “We hope this achievement gives our team and wider business group some real pride in the extra effort we put into our projects. “Our NZ Proud team, sub trades, and home owner all helped contribute to this win, and we are so grateful to everyone involved.” The project started as most large scale alteration projects do, with a long list of challenges. NZ Proud worked on what was a dilapidated ex-rental property on a steep, sandy site for six months, plus another three months of landscaping. The project included a full upgrade of all the major build elements of the existing house including a small addition to the downstairs area. All major parts of the house have been upgraded including aluminium joinery, new bathroom and en-suite, kitchen, and every other room in the house. NZ Proud also designed and executed new landscaping around the property, helping to cater to every specific wish the clients had for every inch of their property. NZ Proud’s team of qualified builders are challenged daily and have years of renovation experience. This project brought them multiple faults in the existing structural engineering including downstairs framing rot, damage and rot in the upstairs floor structure, water damage to the roof framing, leaks in the roof, and a lot of the home was out of level. NZ Proud rectified all of these issues and still maintained its original work scope and budget goals. Johnnie says NZ Proud invested its heart and soul into designing, planning, and executing this job and if it wasn’t for the incredible relationship built with the clients, the job could have been so much more difficult. “Now complete, we are very close with the clients and have sincerely fallen in love with this project and the home itself.” “We hope this achievement gives our team and wider business group some real pride in the extra effort we put into our projects. Our NZ Proud team, sub trades, and home owner all helped contribute to this win, and we are so grateful to everyone involved.” The clients say NZ Proud is a truly professional team that sets itself apart, from initial pricing and advising through to awesome qualified builders and ongoing communication. NZ Proud’s focus is solely on improvements to existing homes, and renovations to existing homes require a lot of experience and skill. “You never know what you are going to find behind the walls, there are often unexpected challenges,” Johnnie says. “You need to have qualified and experienced builders who know what they are doing.” NZ Proud prides itself on employing only qualified carpenters and apprentices in accredited training. With a team of more than 20, NZ Proud builders have decades of experience in renovation building and they individually carry their LBP accreditation, so they can carry out all restricted works. “Training is crucial for individual and company development. “With our own internal apprenticeship program, we believe we are providing a high level of training to deliver the best possible carpenters to the industry.” Working in both Wellington and the Kapiti Coast, with branches and building teams based in both regions, NZ Proud carries out a range of different projects, from older hillside homes in Wellington to coastal batches that need an upgrade. “We love working with local subtrades and suppliers. “Supporting local is more important than ever, and we pride ourselves in our network of reliable and high quality sub-trades in these regions.” • All domestic & commercial plumbing & drainage • Truck, digger & Bobcat hire • Post hole drilling • Yard sales - Quarry metals, topsoils, sand 04 293 6649 | 305 Te Moana Rd, Waikanae | waecontract@xtra.co.nz • Water tank installation • Septic tank installation • Site works • Driveways
