HEB construction project manager Daniel Chisnall says that he and his crews have gained time through careful planning and committed teamwork, which flows through the whole team involved in the project. “We’ve been really lucky with our staff, suppliers, and contractors. They’ve all got on board with what we’re trying to achieve and are hugely motivated to succeed. Many are local and this is a critical project for the region, one that they’ll be able to tell their children and grandchildren that they played a big part in constructing.” The 6 Wharf development comes from decades of increasing demand for port facilities at Napier Port. If the demand continues as it’s tracking, then space for 50% more containers, 94% more cruise ships and 64% more bulk cargo is needed. The new wharf will significantly reduce congestion at the port by accommodating larger ships, extending the port’s container holding capacity and allowing the port to berth ships 24 hours a day. Appointed head contractor in 2019, HEB Construction started the 6 Wharf project in early 2020. Along with building a new wharf, the team is dredging a new vessel turning area and deepening parts of the harbour using a dredge. After two years of work the dredging component of the project is nearing completion and critical elements of the project such as piling and deck construction are now finished. Daniel says the finished deck is a huge milestone as it allows the team to work on bollards and fenders, paving the way for the commissioning phase. “We’ve been really lucky with our staff, suppliers, and contractors. They’ve all got on board with what we’re trying to achieve and are hugely motivated to succeed.” PORTS AND MARINE Industry-leading innovation and engineering solutions for New Zealand ports and marine projects.
