28 | REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT HEB Construction: 6 Wharf - Napier Port At present, HEB’s 125 tonne custom longreach excavator is installing concrete revetment protection blocks, which have been handmade on site by the HEB team. These single blocks can weigh up to 18 tonnes each. Daniel says that environmental sustainability has been a key part of the project. The sustainability approach to the project was designed in consultation with mana whenua, divers and commercial and recreational fishers, and is backed by a lot of scientific research as well as exhaustive management plans. This detailed environmental planning has reduced the impact that construction and dredging has had on the Hawke’s Bay marine environment. The project has had several challenges in the last two years including the pandemic, supply chain constraints and difficult ground conditions. Daniel says that solutions have come from bringing together teams with the right expertise to tackle problems jointly. A good example is when a flammable gas seam was unexpectedly discovered 30 metres underground where the team was installing large piles.
