30 | REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT HEB Construction: 6 Wharf - Napier Port On time delivery for Napier port upgrade T from page 28 Tunnelling and piling experts were brought together and a plan put in place to allow the operation to continue safely and efficiently. Daniel says that HEB aims to leave a place better than it was before it arrived and 6 Wharf is no exception. HEB has helped relocate 200 penguins to an on-site custom-built sanctuary before their safe release by avian marine experts. Also the dredging works is made up of over 1.3 million cubic metres of material. As part of the revetment excavation process, existing armour rock has been taken offshore to create a new reef that will provide on-going future benefits for the marine environment and local community. The success of these newly created reefs is evident in the amount of new fish life already present in the vicinity, says Daniel. The 6 Wharf project has also let HEB give significant work opportunities to locals, up-skilling people in heavy construction and giving them skills they wouldn’t normally have the opportunity to obtain. “Our policy was to employ local staff where possible, and a lot started off as unskilled labour. They’ve now got training in skills such as skippering boats, operating machinery and • 33 deck pours • 400 piles each driven up to 45 metres into the underlying rock layers form the basis of the foundation support for the wharf • 1.3M m3 of dredging in total with no exceedance of water quality limits at Pania Reef. • 10 MoorMaster vacuum-mooring units from Italy will increase mooring speed and berth availability, reduce time in port, and improve safety. • 4500 revetment blocks now constructed on site and installed onto the slope for erosion protection • 10,000sqm of pavement completed and handed back to Napier Port. • 14,000m3 of ground improvement works to control potential soil liquefaction in the event of a large earthquake have now been completed using the Cutter Soil Mixing (CSM) technique. Project snapshot working at heights and in confined spaces. For many it’s changed their lives and given them a great career path going forward.” Daniel says that the project shows HEB’s desire to innovate. This innovation is evident in the development of methods to place the revetment protection. Daniel says that a significant amount of work went into concept design, model development and trialling of concepts. The solution involved bespoke machine, survey and software packages from all over the world. The success has been in the speed and accuracy with which the revetment work has been able to be completed, he says. It is expected that 6 Wharf will be ready for use in mid-2022. “It’s not just that we can innovate – it’s that we love to innovate. Solving challenges and finding the safest and most efficient way to do a project is what gets us out of bed in the morning.” “It’s not just that we can innovate – it’s that we love to innovate.
