36 | DEVELOPMENT The Perry Group: Te Awa Lakes The Perry Group, forged in Hamilton The Perry Group has diverse business interests. The Perry Group’s foundations in Hamilton stem back to the 1950’s when an enterprising 19-year-old by the name of Brian Perry borrowed £1600 from his father to buy a Quick Way excavator—a significant investment back in the day. Quickly becoming a thriving one man business undertaking a number of Hamilton subdivisions and infrastructure projects, Brian broadened into civil engineering undertaking some rather high-risk infrastructure projects. During the 1970s Brian Perry added quarries, galvanizing and property development to his ever expanding portfolio of businesses and in 1976 the Brian Perry Charitable Trust was established contributing to the Waikato community—most notably Waikato Stadium, Sport Waikato and Waikato University. In 1986 the civil business was sold to Fletcher Construction, but The Perry Group continues to be a diverse business with investment interests in land development, galvanizing, the import and distribution of building related products and the production of manuka honey. Its most recent investment is Perry Modular Homes, supplying large scale developers and Kainga Ora with the objective of helping address the issue of affordable housing. Brian’s son Simon is now at the helm of The Perry Group’s commercial entities, and Chairman of the Brian Perry Charitable Trust. Richard Coventry, CEO of the group’s commercial businesses reflects that behind the business’ tenure and growth over the last 66 years has been the vision, experience and capability of the people within The Perry Group, along with the thriving growth triangle- Auckland, Waikato and Tauranga. “That’s created opportunities for businesses in the greater Waikato region - and in particular the construction industry. “The growth in population and the housing market has helped, as well as the large infrastructure spend.” Richard points to the level of freight on the road between Auckland and Hamilton, as well as further south and across to Tauranga as a key driver for a lot of Waikato’s roading infrastructure projects. “The Government has invested billions into the Waikato expressway, which has brought us much closer to Auckland. “Land is a lot cheaper down here and it’s quite a diverse economy with good education institutions, sporting facilities and employment opportunities. “We’re seeing a lot of Auckland people and businesses head south.” Richard Loader “That’s created opportunities for businesses in the greater Waikato region - and in particular the construction industry. The growth in population and the housing market has helped, as well as the large infrastructure spend.” cmwgeosciences.com with exceptional Geotechnical Delivery!
