Quality the driver for rising star Two years after being named One to Watch in the Rising Star category of the Hamilton and central North Island Deloitte Fast 50 awards, MS Civil has fulfilled that prophecy making it to Number 25 on the 2021 Deloitte Fast 50 with 206% revenue growth. Although super proud of how far MS Civil has come since it began in 2017, growth isn’t exactly a driver for managing director Carl Saywell. From the beginning, when he started with a couple of diggers and a couple of trucks, he has simply wanted to deliver high quality work. “It’s never been about the numbers for me,” he says. “ It’s more about what we can do and what we can offer. Being smart about how we work and being focused around the personal needs of our team has always been a huge driver for me.” MS Civil grew quickly with some help from one of Carl’s former bosses, Ross Inglis. Ross was working on the new Hamilton Expressway and needed more resources to deliver this huge project. “We filled a gap for him for in 2018, and grew to about eight staff. Then we needed an administrator and another contracts manager, and by that stage we needed to win something quite substantial. We won our first mini subdivision then we started hiring people with different expertise.” When MS Civil won a six-month, $3.5 million retaining wall project in Taumarunui in 2020, the forward work really stablilised the business. MS Civil has continued to grow to now 36 staff, with the acquisition of 33-yearold Rotorua sealing company Johnstone and Masters at the end of 2021. “I’ve always wanted to be able to deliver a turn-key service with everything in-house as much as possible,” Carl says. “With Johnstone and Masters we have grown our capabilities and there is a very nice union between the two companies.” In 2019, Carl set up his own advisory board to help him make smart decisions and Ross was a part of this, as is Carl’s business advisor from The Icehouse. The advisory board meets quarterly and with 60 years of combined business experience, including every peak and trough that has happened in the past 30 years, Carl is not only well advised but also well supported in his business. “I don’t think anyone can really appreciate or understand what impact Covid is having,” he says. “It’s so widespread with so many that are struggling on all angles. “The rising costs, the reactive planning, getting staff motivated to be at work, the management of the whole thing, and the mental fatigue suffered by all, it’s a lonely job trying to stay motivated to inspire staff through such different and difficult times. “I count myself lucky to have such a supportive family and team that work alongside me. “Without the support of everyone at Johnstone and Masters and MS Civil none of this is possible, especially without the guidance and late-night phone calls with the board members, accountant, and the family. “This recognition is just as much about them as it is about me. Thanks Team!” “It’s never been about the numbers for me. It’s more about what we can do and what we can offer. Being smart about how we work and being focused around the personal needs of our team has always been a huge driver for me.” DOING IT RIGHT WHEN NOBODY IS LOOKING DEVELOPMENT EARTHWORKS DRAINAGE SURFACING 756 Bond Rd, Te Awamutu, Waikato 0508 MS CIVIL (672 4845) admin@mscivil.co.nz | mscivil.co.nz Digger and Truck Hire - Pukeatua Gary Mobile 021 396 237 Proud to support MS Civil Construction
