Swift House near New Plymouth was designed by BOON and modeled off an industrial barn concept with a contemporary flair. Its double gable ends form a focal point with two offset, elongated gable end structures connected by a central hallway. The structure to the east is home to triple car garaging, a self contained unit, two bedrooms and a rumpus to the north, and a spacious mezzanine floor. The structure on the western side contains the master suite, kitchen, living, and dining, and another mezzanine acting as a retreat from the open plan living area. For Chris Bell Construction, the inclusion of laminate timber beams, glulam portals, and Woodspan® PLT (Parallel Laminated Timber) panels made the project an interesting one to tackle. “Woodspan® PLT is a solid timber panel from Taranakipine™ that looks amazing and is able to span up to about 6m,” Chris says. “We always try to be progressive and innovative, doing different things and using new products, and that way we are able to stay ahead of the market.” Swift House uses Woodspan® PLT panels on the mezzanine mid floors and the roof structure. Chris Bell Construction was involved in the design and in pioneering the use of Woodspan® PLT as it was being developed by Taranakipine™, providing professional feedback on the performance of the product and helping to come up with specific lifting and fixing techniques for the ongoing use of the product. “We learn a lot every day and ever since we started using it, we have learnt even more efficient ways of lifting and fixing to the point where Woodspan® PLT is now being installed all around the country.” As a clear pine product with no knots, Woodspan® PLT is as easy to work with as it is strong and efficient, cutting down construction time by as much as 30%. Because the product is extremely structurally sound yet lighter than concrete or steel, benefits can be achieved in both the structural costs and in the time it takes to install the panels. Chris Bell Construction is a growing team of 30 staff including skilled Master Builders, apprentices, project managers, quantity surveyors, and admin staff.
