76 | BUILDING Beeson Brothers Builders Bringing on the next generation T T Sue Russell In 2020 Beeson Brothers built a new home for Lawrence’s in-laws at Te Aroha. One thing Dan Beeson is very proud of during his building career with brother Lawrence is the fact that their company has been responsible for training many apprentices who have gone on to run their own businesses. Along with wife Sarah, who takes care of the all-important administration, the Te Awamutu-based builders are busy and usually have three or four building projects on the go at once. The company established over 15 years ago, though Dan has been building 25 years in all. “That works well, given particularly now we have to schedule work well in advance to ensure supply of materials comes in at the right time,” Dan says. When Business Central spoke with Dan, the company had two builders; one an apprentice, working with them. The vast majority of builds are new homes in and around Te Awamutu. In 2020 Beeson Brothers built a new home for Lawrence’s in-laws at Te Aroha. The beautifully designed and tastefully decorated home was then entered in the Master Builders House of the Year Award last year, taking out line-honours for its category in the region and at national level and being chosen as a home in the Top 100 category. Covid stopped the project for about 6 weeks but Dan says the build went very well and the result is a home that the owners are really enjoying living in, with plenty of space and many special elements. “The glazing units certainly make a statement, allowing plenty of light to flood the home and the use of cedar panels inside and out really add warmth and visual interest.” This is not the first home Dan and Lawrence have built for the owners and Dan says it may not be the last. “We really enjoyed the fact that we had a lot of input into its design and its very satisfying to have the industry recognise the quality of the build.” Asked how Covid is playing out now after two years here Dan says that materials such as Gib board are becoming increasingly scarce. “I understand merchants are going to be allocated a certain quota of product, so that’s going to make supply more challenging. We just have to be well organised and plan well in advance.” With nine houses in front of them to build the next couple of years are secured. One thing Dan says is really important for those considering a building career and establishing a business is the fact that you have to enjoy what you’re doing. “You also have to be organised and have great relationships with your sub-contractors and architects. “We use the same guys as much as we can and it works well for us and for them. “We know they understand the standard of work we build to and they have the security of ongoing work from us.” Beeson Brothers Builders takes on projects all over the Waikato and Dan says there is a lot of new building work happening around Te Awamutu. And having been building as long as he has Dan says changes in the apprenticeship training programme these days put more responsibility on the apprentice. “When I did my training it was 8000 hours. Today, it’s a case of having units assessed and ticked-off rather than a set number of hours. We use BCITO for our apprentices.” Proud to support Beeson Brothers Building Email: info@alitech.co.nz | Freephone: 0508 254 8324 Showrooms in Waihi and Hamilton | www.alitech.co.nz • ALUMINIUM WINDOWS & DOORS • RESIDENTIAL / LIGHT COMMERCIAL • APL ARCHITECTURAL SERIES • THERMAL HEARTJOINERY SYSTEMS Proud to support Beeson Brothers Building
