78 | Nixon Homes Homes with top quality flair T Sue Russell Nixon Homes has created a strong team of builders and subcontractors who deliver results to an extremely high standard. BUILDING It has been a busy three years for brothers Cameron and Michael Homes, who collectively are Nixon Homes, a Hamilton-based residential building business, who are determined to offer clients the very best value for money and top quality flair. While Cameron leads the building team on a day to day level, Michael, who until recently resided in Holland, returning in August 2021, takes care of the finances, administration and marketing. Their complementary skills work well, creating a supportive and engaging experience for clients, choosing from one of Nixon Homes own designs, or through a design and build process. “We’re pleased with what we have achieved so far. Cameron has 16 years of building experience having been taught the tools of the trade by our Dad. “We’re a small company, with fewer overheads than other larger business, and so we aim to be much more cost effective, to give our clients a great building experience and at the same time build homes that are to a very high standard of craftsmanship,” says Michael. Their show-home, located at 19 The Meadows Drive, Flagstaff, Hamilton, received a regional silver award in the 2020 Registered Master Builders House of the Year Award, confirming what Cameron and Michael knew about its quality and design. Judges noted the four-bedroom home was designed as an entertainer’s dream. The impressive double-door entry, with adjacent large Otago stone schist wall sets the tone for what lies inside. A special feature is large cavity sliding glass doors that disappear inside the wall when opened creating the ultimate outdoor entertaining space while giving a sense of space and privacy. The show-home has now been sold but still acts as the company’s base, offering clients an opportunity to experience the array of materials and design elements on offer. “We have our own architect who very much understands what Nixon Homes stands for,” says Michael. One thing Michael and Cameron observed, following the completion of the show-home was that a number of clients wanted to copy the home, with minor changes. “That really told us we were on to a winner.” For clients who have their own piece of land, Cameron offers ideas to complement the sections orientation and make best use of the space available. Once a general sense of what would work best is arrived at with the client, the architect is engaged to bring the design to life. Always looking for opportunities, Cameron and Michael are interested in discussing with potential investors, the idea of moving into the in-fill housing sector. Parts of Hamilton are fast moving in this direction, with older homes on ¼ acre sections being bought by property developers who then use the land footprint to construct multiple dwellings. “With prices increasing so much lately, people can’t afford a large house on a big section and for many new home-owners the preferred option is a smaller, low-maintenance home, on a smaller section.” Plans ahead are also to build a new showhome, in the Flagstaff area. Working with Cameron are four crews of two. It means that multiple builds can be undertaken in similar time-frames. Cameron oversees all the builds to ensure the high level of quality is kept and having 4 crews means he has the flexibility to shift more staff on to a site when needed. When Business Central spoke with Michael towards the business end of the year, the company had 7 builds on the go. He says looking ahead there’s plenty of work scheduled and sees the next challenges as about making their systems even more efficient. “Nixon Homes has had to grow quickly over the past two years. “We have created a strong team of builders and subcontractors who deliver results to an extremely high standard. We take a lot of pride in handing over homes to our clients that we know are finished with quality craftmsanship that will exceed their expectations”.
