88 | Fresh start for College T from page 87 COMMUNITY Wairarapa College Matt says he recently spoke to a group of students, showing them the designs for the new multi-purpose sports courts and they were both surprised and excited at the extent of the project, what it would deliver and what the old area would be transformed into. “The concept for the new courts came internally and was led by the School’s Asset Manager Mike Geenty. “It then went to Frequency, our Wellington based project managers, and they really helped shape it with input from GameOn Turf, who will also do the turf installation. The civil engineering work has been done by Cameron Fauvel Projects, with Willbert Civil doing the construction work. Both Mac Fauvel and Kyle Williams from Willbert are past students.” Development of Wairarapa College’s multi-purpose sports turf facility is one of two major projects the school currently has underway. A wider capital work project includes a Supported Learning Centre, a Food Technology Hub and the refurbishment of the 86-yearold Sutherland block, which incorporates the school’s main administration area and a teaching space. Due for completion in February 2022, the Supported Learning Centre is designed to provide specialised teaching rooms for students with diverse learning needs. The development of the brand new Food Tech Hub will include a school café, two food technology classrooms, a commercial kitchen and a general teaching space, and is set for a Mid-2022 completion date. Matt says the Supported Learning Centre and the Food Tech Hub will provide facilities and equipment that are fit for purpose. “Students will benefit from some very highend specialised rooms and the learning that goes with it. Refurbishment of the Sutherland Block will immediately follow completion of the Food Tech Hub and will modernise the classrooms and provide greater flexibility with breakout spaces. There will also be a lot of seismic strengthening. Property development has been talked about for a long time and its now all starting to come together with the multi-purpose turf and the new buildings underway. Like many schools, the existing infrastructure is well-loved and seeing something new that can be enjoyed will enhance school and community pride.” Founded in 1923, Wairarapa College is a secondary school with rich traditions, and works closely with its community to provide an excellent education to a diverse range of students. “We have our centenary coming up in 2023 and I hope that a lot of our past students and teachers can attend to see just where the school is at because they have had a voice in what the school will look like and raised a lot of ideas and concerns about what the school needed. “One thing that is special about Wairarapa College is the connection to the community and our past students as well.” “One thing that is special about Wairarapa College is the connection to the community and our past students as well.” 0800 GAMEON www.gameonturf.co.nz NZ Leading Supplier in Synthetic Turf for Landscaping and Sports Surfaces We’ve got your sports, playground & landscaping requirements covered. With a decade’s experience in sports field construction, landscaping and turf management, Bevan Williamson established GameOn Turf in 2016 with sports surfaces the main focus and an unyielding vision for high quality workmanship, product and customer service. Establishing a solid reputation for quality craftsmanship, GameOn Turf’s turnover has continued to increase 30% year-on-year and now employs a team of ten experienced installers, two sales staff, two administration staff and warehouse manager with Bevan continuing to play a key hands-on role. Based in Auckland, the team at GameOn Turf travels throughout New Zealand working on artificial sports and recreational surfaces from stadiums to schools. Adding residential landscaping to the business, GameOn Turf operates branches in Wellington, Christchurch, Palmerston North, Hawke’s Bay, Dunedin, Bay of Plenty, Northland and Waikato specifically to cater for residential landscaping needs. Quality product has always been a signature requirement for GameOn Turf and in 2020 that was enhanced by signing with APT as supplier of choice. Based out of Melbourne, APT is the World #1 in terms of volume and quality for artificial turf and synthetic sports surfaces includes tennis, cricket, hockey, and multisport. “For the sports side of the business our main clients are schools and that’s where we’ve really built the brand and get a lot of referrals,” says Bevan. We also look after childcare centres, cricket pavilions, tennis courts, bowling greens and gyms. For schools we typically create multipurpose-turfed areas including tennis, netball, basketball, football and futsal. We can provide running tracks and games’ areas. That’s all part of the design that we provide. We visit the site and see what sports the kids are playing, then work out design requirements which might include drainage and earthworks, construction, laying turf, fencing, goals, nets and equipment.” Bevan says that in many cases existing school courts have been down for decades and the school’s budget may not extend to a complete reconstruction. “We can provide remedial patching or we can do a reconstruction to specific areas. Whether it’s a complete new development or remediation, GameOn is about quality over quantity, delivering what we say we will do and using experienced skilled people in the industry.” It's game on for GameOn Turf
