BUILDING An impressive, fully off-grid, architecturally designed new home in rural Napier is a recently completed standout project from Hawke’s Bay design-and-build company, SS Homes. This 300sqm home showcases innovative, sustainable technology, while supporting a luxurious living environment. “When people think of off-grid homes, they often imagine something basic or rustic. But this house proves you can have energy independence without sacrificing style and function,” says SS Homes owner, architectural designer and ADNZ member, Jason Sullivan. The Puketitiri Road home designed by SS Homes was built by respected Napier builder, Mark Sinden of Sinden Building. The spacious, four-bedroom family home is powered by an advanced solar energy system from Aaron Duncan of Freenergy Solar Solutions, Hawke’s Bay. This fully off-grid masterpiece features 56 (430W) solar panels and 40kWh LFP Lithium Battery storage, a fully ducted hot-water heat pump and air-conditioning system, EV charging capability and a swimming pool, all powered by renewable energy. The choice to be fully off-grid was made in lieu of installing fixed power lines to the property at a cost to the homeowners of $500,000. “It made sense then to invest $110,000 in a cutting-edge solar system for sustainable fulltime off-grid living,” says Jason. The off-grid system can generate enough power to run an economical hot-water heat pump with dual heating and fully ducted air-conditioning capabilities. “Hot-water heat pumps actually pull low currents, and you can dedicate circuits and set timers to aid efficiencies,” says Jason. The other wing of the home has an Infinity gas continuous-flow hot-water system for the main bathroom, while two wood-burning fireplaces complement the solar-powered heating system for extra heat in winter. Beyond its impressive sustainability features, the home also displays excellence in architectural design, with pre-primed bevel-back weatherboard cladding capped with Colorsteel roofing, gabled entrances, lofty ceilings and a cosy interior featuring carpet, planking and tiles. The homeowners were inspired by an earlier SS Homes design for a similar rural property on Waipuka Road. They moved into their sustainable-energy home last November and are thrilled with the outcome. Their testimonial praises Jason and his team’s problem-solving approach, commitment to timelines and budgets, and overall craftsmanship. “We have had overwhelmingly positive feedback on the home, its features, and the quality of workmanship. Having a home that would stand the test of time in both build quality and design choices was important to us. Jason and his preferred partners helped us towards this goal.” With over 35 years of experience in the building and design industry, Jason’s expertise spans both construction and architecture, affording him an understanding of both the building and design sides, and enabling him to create homes that not only look great but are also well thought out for construction efficiency. Whether it’s an off-grid rural retreat, a modern family home, or a high-end holiday home, SS Homes ensures each bespoke project is optimally designed for its site, the client’s needs and their budget.
