Elemental Group REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Taranaki-based sustainable energy company Elemental Group is powering ahead as a leader in the global transition to renewable energy. Established in 2014 and 100 percent New Zealand-owned and operated, Elemental has an unwavering commitment to sustainability and cutting-edge solutions, shaping the future of renewable energy both in New Zealand and beyond. From its early success designing and project-managing solar minigrids developments for island nations to its ambitious offshore wind projects, Elemental continues to expand its reach. The company’s projects span multiple continents, contributing to the global shift towards cleaner, more reliable energy. “Our core principle of better energy solutions has stood the test of time and remains at the heart of everything Elemental does,” CEO Nick Jackson says. “Recently, we’ve expanded and structured our business to allow our subsidiaries to focus on their specific strengths.” With a solid foundation in renewable energy project management, Elemental has completed a multitude of projects over the past decade. Notably, the solar energy developments it has overseen in both the Caribbean and the Pacific regions now contribute 15GWh of clean energy annually. In addition, Elemental’s environmental team ensures the associated environmental impacts of each project are minimised, while maximising the associated positive social impacts. One of the most exciting developments in New Zealand’s renewable sector is Elemental’s leadership in offshore wind energy. Initially launched in late 2019, and following a three-year partnership with Spanish-based BlueFloat Energy that ended late 2024, Elemental now owns the intellectual property for two groundbreaking projects through its subsidiary, NZ Offshore Wind Limited (NZOWL): South Taranaki Offshore Wind, a 900MW fixed-bottom offshore wind project set to provide enough power for 430,000 homes, significantly boosting New Zealand’s electricity grid; and Waikato Offshore Wind, a two-phase project beginning with an 810MW fixed-bottom installation, followed by a second phase deploying floating wind technology, adding another 1,125MW of capacity. When complete, this initiative will provide power to more than 800,000 homes. With its prime wind resources and a workforce that understands how to undertake difficult projects in an offshore environment, New Zealand is poised to become a major player in offshore wind energy. “We are actively looking to secure partners to further these projects,” Nick says. In 2020, Elemental partnered with Energy Estate to form Kākāriki, a project that plays a unique role in the New Zealand energy ecosystem. “Our Kākāriki joint venture takes a regional approach to our development activities, focusing on the best renewable resources in each region and how our projects can drive decarbonisation and load growth at the regional level,” Nick says. “We passionately believe in the significance and immediacy of the opportunity to develop large-scale renewable energy projects and clean industrial precincts, which can help meet New Zealand’s decarbonisation goals and support new industries attracted by access to 24/7 clean energy.” Additionally, Elemental launched a new subsidiary, Elemental Well Solutions, in February 2025. This division focuses on well integrity, maintenance, and decommissioning services for the energy sector in Taranaki, further solidifying the company’s role as a comprehensive energy solutions provider. As the company continues to push boundaries and embrace new technologies, its mission remains clear: to contribute to a carbon-zero future by delivering forward-thinking solutions that empower communities and industries to transition to sustainable energy.
