It’s been a really engaging project for the team to get involved in and is certainly making a difference.” REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Working very much as a team, Steve and Kelly-Anne Galbraith have established and grown their earthmoving, civil works business from humble beginnings to the successful company it is today. In just 8 years they’ve grown to now engage a team of 41, operating a range of machinery to service the forestry, roading, subdivision development and civil and TREC from their base in Napier. It’s a real family affair with their eldest son Connor working for them full-time and by growing their fleet, supporting their staff to gain valuable skills and experiences, it would seem the future looks very bright indeed. “We’re certainly very proud of what we’ve achieved since starting. Steve had been working in the earthmoving space for many years and just got to the point where he wanted to lead his own company and though it meant taking some risks it’s been a very good journey for us,” says Kelly-Anne. Part of the reason for the company’s success has been growing it to a stage where the structure supports both Steve and Kelly-Anne to concentrate more on procuring new work, building valuable relationships within the industries they serve and in supporting their staff. “We oversee the whole operation but have a forestry supervisor and two civil supervisors who manage the day to day of the teams out there doing it.” And the strength of that structure has certainly been experienced by the couple lately with Steve having to take a quieter back seat for a few weeks following foot surgery. “He’s not very good at sitting still but I’m keeping an eye on how much work he’s doing day to day at the moment,” says Kelly-Anne. While forestry work is pretty much ongoing, building and maintaining forestry tracks, shifting slash and removing stumps, Galbraith Earthmovers have taken up a contract working on the Napier-Wairoa highway which was severely undermined during major flooding events the region experienced with Cyclone Gabrielle and the like. “We’re clearing out slips, digging old rock out, reinstating new material and rebuilding sections of roading that were washed away. It’s been a really engaging project for the team to get involved in and is certainly making a difference,” says Steve. Given the nature of projects the company gets involved in, there can be teams spread out over a large geography; down to Dannevirke and Palmerston North, north up to Mahia way and inland through to Rotorua. He’s actually looking for a diesel mechanic apprenticeship and we wish him well. “We’ve helped him by giving him experiences of machinery and though he will likely leave us, its our way of bringing the next generation through,” Steve says. Steve began operating machinery from the age of 13 and running projects and supervising teams by 19 years of age, so there isn’t much about the sectors the company work in that he doesn’t know well. Technologies are continually envolving in the industry, with GPS and 3D imaging systems, for instance, now becoming standard tools to help operators get the job done well. “We think that’s one of the things that’s great about our industry,” says Steve. “There’s always new skills to learn and for anyone keen there’s a world of opportunity. “It’s the confidence we’ve instilled in our team that is a big part of what makes our company the success it is today.”
