| 41 Kim Newth A launch pad for a rewarding career Air Hawke’s Bay is a specialist provider of full-time integrated pilot training for domestic and international students. Air Hawke’s Bay REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Leading New Zealand flight school, Air Hawke’s Bay, has successfully trained pilots for professional careers in aviation since 1996, and has an enviable reputation with a high percentage of its graduates employed in the global aviation industry. “Our students describe the academy as a home away from home, and our instructing team work hard to provide trainees with the best-possible preparation for their aviation career,” says general manager Julie Wakefield. “Our low instructor-to-student ratio ensures a close connection and a supportive, encouraging environment.” Air Hawke’s Bay is a specialist provider of full-time integrated pilot training for domestic and international students. Operating a range of aircraft from Piper Tomahawks and Cessna 152s to G1000-equipped Cessna 172s and a Diamond DA42 Twin, the company was the first New Zealand training provider certificated under CAA Rule Part 141 (Aviation Training and Assessments). It is situated at the Hastings Aerodrome, with the region’s favourable weather conditions allowing students to maximise their flying time. Air Hawke’s Bay offers a two-year New Zealand Diploma in Aviation - Levels 5 and 6. The curriculum is designed for students to complete PPL, CPL, and Single Engine Instrument Rating in their first year, with the second dedicated to C-Cat, ATPLs and advanced multi-engine training. Students can apply to participate in the internship programme. Alongside their own studies, the students receive a unique opportunity to gain valuable instructing hours under the direct supervision and guidance of experienced B-Cat instructors. This additional benefit can enhance their employment opportunities, kick-starting their aviation career. “The reality is that you cannot step straight from graduating with the diploma to being an airline pilot. All our graduates come out with substantial hours in comparison to other flight schools, and we make sure they do get as much flying as possible. Our unique internship programme gives an additional opportunity for students to further build their flying hours, skills and experience,” Julie says. Air Hawke’s Bay has produced many professional flight instructors, and Julie says there is a constant need for pilots with these skills. Air Hawke’s Bay’s commitment to consistent and ongoing staff training ensures an instructing team that has the capability and accreditations necessary for advanced-level aviation training. With the global shortage of pilots, now is the right time to pursue an aviation career. “Passion for aviation is key for anyone looking at training to become a professional pilot; this coupled with dedication and hard work will set a student up in the right direction.” Air Hawke’s Bay has 40 to 50 students split between domestic and international cohorts. “Keeping our eye on the future, we are currently developing a satellite base at Hawke’s Bay Airport in Napier. “These are exciting times, and we are looking forward to a bright future.” Air Hawke’s Bay encourages visitors at any time throughout the year, with an annual open day on September 6. All are very welcome.
