MCL Construction started as JC Mackersey in 1948, before becoming Mackersey Construction in 1988, then MCL Construction Ltd in 2016. The company has also been involved in health, education and government projects throughout the North Island, and with its allied joinery and interior fit-out businesses it employs close to 100 staff. MCL Joinery offers a standalone design-and-manufacture service, providing quality joinery throughout New Zealand, combining traditional joinery techniques with modern manufacturing, including CNC (computer numerical control) processes. MCL Commercial Interiors was established in June 2015, and specialises in interior solutions for commercial, industrial and residential buildings. Its services include suspended ceilings, steel stud and aluminium glazed internal partitioning systems, acoustics soundproofing, office and decorative partitioning, seismic improvements and passive fire protection. Director Philip Mitchell says the scale and diversity of the company offers tremendous scope for the type of projects MCL has the capability for, with the four-level Customs Quay apartments, offices and hospitality development in Ahuriri being a perfect example. Constructed for Port View Limited, Customs Quay was a three-year, $50 million project that will be yet another enduring legacy on the town’s urban landscape for MCL. “Ahuriri is an iconic location in Hawke’s Bay, steeped with history and there are a lot of apartment conversions in old buildings in this area,” Philip says.
