MCL Construction Ltd REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT As a standalone company, Hawke’s Bay business MCL Joinery operates independently but collaboratively with the construction and commercial interiors arms of MCL. Like MCL Construction, the joinery firm has a long history and has been operating since 1949, while MCL Commercial Interiors, established in 2015, is part of the construction business. MCL director Philip Mitchell says for any project, MCL Joinery can work with a design provided by the client’s architect or, depending on the scope, can provide an inhouse design using the expertise of its own team. MCL Joinery’s manager/designer Denise Otto has an architectural background, while the wider MCL team can collaborate to provide in-house solutions for a project across any or all of the company’s disciplines. MCL Construction was the main contractor for developer Murphy Properties’ eye-catching new offices located in the heart of Napier, which house several government departments, such as Ministry of Social Development and Kainga Ora. A $20 million project, the 3200sqm building spans three levels and has a dedicated car park on the ground floor and basement. It is one of many large contracts completed by MCL Construction with the support of its commercial interior division and MCL Joinery. The joinery combines traditional joinery techniques with modern manufacturing processes, either from its state-of-the-art facility on MCL Construction’s site in Hastings, or working on- site when needed, where elements of bespoke craftsmanship are involved. This traditional hand-crafting on highly specialised projects that cannot be done by machines sets MCL Joinery apart, Phil says. “There can be a lot of curves and different materials, and quite often involves templating and then sampling for approval from clients so they can see what the vision of the architect or the designer is. “It also assists us in providing a budget for the clients, too, because knowing how much it’s going to cost is quite key for us and our clients.” The impressive interior joinery manufacture and fit-out at Hawke’s Bay Dermatology in Havelock North was a project that beautifully showcased both the contemporary and traditional skills offered by MCL Joinery’s team. The reception area creates an ambient welcome to clients, featuring architectural wall panels with hidden doors, softened by the curved reception desk. In addition, functional clinical working areas were manufactured, but are complemented by oak doors and detailing. MCL Construction’s new offices in Hastings, completed in 2023, showcase MCL Joinery’s craftsmanship, and doubles as its ‘showroom’ for clients. MCL Commercial Interiors employs a team of nine staff. It is led by Jon Cruise and specialises in interior solutions for commercial, industrial and residential buildings. Its services include suspended ceilings, steel stud and aluminium glazed internal partitioning systems, acoustics soundproofing, office and decorative partitioning, seismic improvements and passive fire protection.
