REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Construction is well underway on Farmlands’ new flagship store at 35 Hudson Road, Bell Block, marking a major investment in the Taranaki region, with both Farmlands and landlord/developer Pacific Partners Property looking forward to unveiling a store that sets a new standard for rural retail. Farmlands’ current New Plymouth site has long struggled with limited space and service offerings. “We’ve had a site in New Plymouth for quite some time, but it hasn’t provided the best experience for our customers or our staff,” says Farmlands chief customer officer Blair Robinson. “After extensive planning, we’ve finally broken ground on a full-service site that will cater to the diverse needs of our customers in Taranaki.” The new location will offer an expanded range of products, and will include a drivethrough for nutrition and feed supplies, allowing customers to conveniently pick up essential goods in minutes. The store aims to serve both Farmlands’ core shareholder base of farmers and growers, as well as lifestyle customers, who require supplies for equine care, small animals, and home-based agriculture. “This will be a flagship store for the region,” Blair says. “We’re increasing our focus on customer service and expanding our offerings to better meet the needs of those who live on the land, whether they farm it for a living or not. Our FarmlandsPRO service will continue to provide great benefits to shareholders, while new features like the drive-through will make shopping easier for everyone.” The construction process is progressing smoothly, with tilt slab walls now being erected. Farmlands is targeting an October 2025 completion date, with a soft launch followed by an official opening event to introduce the community to the new facility. For Pacific Partners Property, the development represents more than just another commercial project. Managing director Layton Rowe says a collaborative effort has gone into designing the store. “We’ve worked closely with Farmlands to ensure this location is tailored to their needs,” he says. T T Kelly Deeks “They’ve been looking for a new store in New Plymouth for about five years, and we believe we’ve delivered a great product in a prime location.” Pacific Partners Property is becoming well known for its commitment to high-quality, long-lasting architectural developments, and Layton sees this as his best project to date. “A lot of developers build something based on price, but I always aim to improve with each project,” he says. “We’re using more precast concrete, which means this store will stand the test of time and look just as good in a decade as it does on the day it opens.” Adding to the project’s historical significance, the site was once home to the old Bell Block aerodrome, an aspect that Layton, born and bred in the area, finds particularly nostalgic. The investment in the new store is part of Farmlands’ broader strategy to enhance service offerings across its network. Alongside the Taranaki store, the cooperative is also launching a new bulk and retail store in Twyford, Hastings, alongside its recently launched Horticulture Hub. With better parking, dedicated delivery areas, and enhanced recycling services in partnership with Agrecovery, the new New Plymouth store is poised to become a key asset for the local farming community.
