| 55 CM Engineering/Pirtek Global connection the key CM Engineering specialises in on-site repairs and installations with its six service vehicles. ENGINEERING Its relationship with the American giant global fluid transfer system manufacturer Pirtek has been central to the success of CM Engineering in its servicing of agricultural and related machinery for the booming Central Hawke’s Bay farming sector. Waipukurau-based CM Engineering specialises in on-site repairs and installations with its six service vehicles, while its Burnside Road workshop carries out a range of construction and repair work that lately has extended to steel frames for homes. “Our core business is keeping machinery and trucking operators working through the inevitable breakdowns and service requirements typical of the dairying, forestry, horticultural, earthmoving and civil works industries,” CM Engineering founder and chief executive Sam Barry says. “CM Engineering started out in 2017 doing agriculture-based engineering, offering a 24/7 mobile repair and maintenance service out of an old pole barn for the first 12 months, and we grew from there into the current premises and staff of nine. “In 2020, we partnered with Pirtek to establish that company’s franchise operation in the Central Hawke’s Bay; Pirtek, otherwise, has 20-odd service centres and 60-odd vehicles working round the country.” Outside of New Zealand, Pirtek has a global network of 120,000 customers, shifting more than 14,000 product lines with a staff of 3000. T T Hugh de Lacy From a distribution centre in Auckland, Pirtek NZ provides a range of support resources, including testing and certifying hydraulic and industrial hoses and fittings, and offers the likes of ball valves and couplings, Kamlok quick-connect fittings, Let-Lok instrument fittings, oils and lubricants. Two years ago, CM Engineering commissioned Roadrunner Manufacturing, located in Bulls, to produce a customised truck based on a 4WD Mitsubishi Canter, enabling CM to cover a larger land area. Beginning from a basic sketch that Sam drew, Roadrunner built a mobile hydraulic hose- repair facility that incorporates central locking for three lift-up doors with gas struts, with space for a generator, compressor and welding plant. Displaying the Pirtek Central Hawke’s Bay livery, CM Engineering also runs four service vehicles similarly well-equipped. “We do everything from silage wagon and cattle crush repairs and servicing to designing and building augur hoppers, feed-pads and cowshed repairs,” Sam says. “Our structural engineering services extend to building structural portal and pergola frames, and we particularly enjoy building custom-made fire braziers, as well as clotheslines, gates and outdoor furniture.“ Practical business solutions for hard working Kiwis.
