NZ Forestry - Taranaki FORESTRY NZ Forestry is a professional forest management company providing a personalised service covering all aspects from seedling to sale, including forest establishment, forest management and engineering, carbon forestry, and harvesting and marketing. Owned by three families, NZ Forestry proudly supports other New Zealand families – along with institutional and corporate clients – to grow their assets. With regional offices in Whāngarei, New Plymouth and Blenheim, NZ Forestry is involved in a wide range of projects – both large and small – in key forestry regions. As a member of the Forest Stewardship Council, NZ Forestry follows strict policies and procedures on protecting wildlife habitat and species, and is doing exciting work in this area. “We are currently doing a collaboration with an iwi based in Taranaki to build our understanding of how North Island brown kiwi behave around forest operations,” says director Cam Eyre, who is one of three experienced, registered forestry consultants at the helm of NZ Forestry. “It’s re-writing the book on how people work around kiwi.” Forest management is a labour-intensive business. Complementing NZ Forestry’s management team are 10 qualified foresters, and around 300 regional subcontractors. The area of forest estate under their management totals 38,000 hectares. “We are a family business; from our clients to our contractors and everyone in between it’s all about us working hand in hand with other families,” says Cam, who notes that forestry is playing a very significant role today in improving rural economies. “The sector is a massive employer, creating jobs for sawmill workers, cartage and roading contractors, loggers and planters. Community recreational engagement around forests is huge, too.” For NZ Forestry’s corporate clients, forestry investments can be as large as 10,000 hectares, while family investors usually hold 100 to 1000 hectares. Many are farming families seeking to diversify their income and find the best use for their land. Cam says potential forestry investors need to do their due diligence before proceeding. “As is the case in real estate, location is an important consideration. Then it’s a matter of understanding what you’re wanting to get out of the investment. Is it a long-term commitment for your children, or something you’re wanting to harvest yourself? Are there particular conservation goals? Once people understand what their drivers are, they can bring that to the table and let us help them find the best solution.” For families weighing up forestry options, Cam recommends getting in touch. “It all starts with good conversations about how we can match their investment with what they want and build their understanding of what’s involved.” Factors like infrastructure, harvest system and market value can all have a big impact on return. Cam says working with a trusted forest professional is the best way to achieve optimal results, and avoid unforeseen costs. The total annual harvest for NZ Forestry is around one million tonnes. Most of the harvested timber is exported or sent to domestic sawmills around New Zealand. Forestry offers low-carbon solutions, with innovation giving rise to quality new products, such as cross-laminated beams. Given the consistent stream of logs coming out of the forestry sector, more investment in such innovation and to boost domestic processing would be welcome, says Cam.
