T T Bernadette Cooney Providing efficient, affordable and environmentally responsible waste disposal services for construction and demolition sectors throughout the Waikato, family-owned-and-operated business, Purpose Fill Ltd, is led by former professional fire fighter Paul Gerritsen and his wife Anne. Purpose Fill specialises in commercial and residential skip bin hire and purpose bag waste removal, with emphasis on recycling and resource recovery, meaning more materials are repurposed rather than sent to landfills. Their services cover general waste, hard fill, garden waste, demolition site clearance, and asbestos and concrete disposal. They also offer portable toilet hire, catering to the needs of construction sites where bins and sanitation go hand in hand. “We focus on construction and demolition waste,” says Paul. “But we also offer residential skip hire, purpose bags and same-day bag collection.” Unlike traditional waste disposal companies that simply haul waste to landfill, Purpose Fill runs its own recycling yard in Hamilton, where collected waste is carefully sorted. A dedicated team of sorters, supported by digger operators, ensures that as much material as possible is diverted from landfill. “It’s our purpose to find new markets for recyclable materials, and minimise what gets dumped.” The company’s current key innovation is its timber-recycling initiative, where treated wood waste is separated and sent to Auckland for chipping. With a large portion repurposed as biofuel for Golden Bay Cement’s kilns in Whangarei, this process has helped the cement plant reduce its reliance on fossil fuels by up to 50%. Meanwhile, untreated timber is sent to local Waikato processors, where it is turned into calf bedding, or reused as pallets. Plasterboard recycling is another area of focus, supplying specialised plasterboard waste bags to construction sites, keeping plasterboard off-cuts clean and free from contamination. “Plasterboard is 99.9% gypsum, and gypsum is actually an expensive product, so we can recover that out of the Gib board, and it can then be ground down for use as a soil amendment for farmers to improve soil structure and drainage,”:Paul explains. “It’s a case of educating more people about the benefits of re-purposed waste products. I’m always looking into materials we can recover, and identify new markets they can be recycled into. There is still a lot of material that can’t currently be recycled that should be able to in the future, like construction plastics.” Later this year, the company plans to buy a shredder to break down wood and plasterboard locally, reducing transportation costs and the company’s carbon footprint. “The next evolution for us is not just sorting waste but processing it ourselves. That way, we can repurpose materials right here in Hamilton, instead of trucking them to Auckland. It’s better for business and better for the environment.” With over 600 five-star Google reviews, Purpose Fill has earned a reputation for consistent reliability. Serving Waikato with some outreach to Auckland and Tauranga, Purpose Fill is the goto provider for construction and demolition waste management—or even a skip bin for a home clean-up.
