BUILDING Grantham Builders Residential renovations have usually been the specialist domain for Grantham Builders, but given the changing market situation, the company has pivotted to include commercial projects in its lineup. Matt and Anne Grantham established Grantham Builders in 2017, servicing the lower North Island from their base at Reikorangi, inland from Waikanae. Anne says when the focus of work is on renovations, it requires the ability to think ‘outside the box’ somewhat, because there are elements of uncertainty as to what will be discovered when structural elements are changed. “This is where Matt excels. He’ll sit down with a client and really get a sound understanding of what they are seeking and then work up design ideas to start to bring their visions to life,” says Anne. “This time is really important, and Matt’s able to advise as to whether the vision is in line with the budget. It’s all about making their dreams real in a practical, achievable way.” Having strong people skills is very important, and Anne says Matt is naturally very good at having conversations with clients. “We understand that the project, be it big or small, is really important to them, and Matt takes the time to ensure they are absolutely happy with what is planned. He tends to find areas he and the client have in common and this puts them at ease. It starts to become a partnership.” About three years ago, Matt undertook some residential window installs for Ian Craig, from Nebulite Palmerston North. “Our government contract had come to an end and we were on the verge of looking at downsizing. Nebulite threw us a lifeline installing windows in the commercial sector. We needed to make a decision either to downsize or hire another person and give commercial a go. It was a turning point for us,” says Anne. “Ian’s support of us at a critical time has been massive. We have so much respect for him and his professionalism. He’s a really good person.” The decision was made to hire another apprentice in September 2024, and while the industry is still uncertain, Anne says these days the business concentrates mainly on commercial work, while picking up residential jobs as these arise. Nearing completion is a renovation in Mirimar, Wellington, involving the construction of a large walk-in wardrobe and new ensuite. Anne says the project has been progressing very well. “We’ve also been working for a woman who has converted an old dairy into a home in Pinehaven, Upper Hutt. She’s been an amazing client to work with. It’s been refreshing working with someone who has not been afraid to be bold and make the space her own. “The project hasn’t been without its challenges, and currently is still waiting for the kitchen to be completed, but again this client has been very understanding and taken it all in her stride.” Another project in the Wairarapa featured on an episode of the television programme Country Homes, where a couple views a number of homes to buy before making their selection. “The home we worked on was their pick, and it was a beautiful build, so we were very proud of that.” While Matt is still engaged very much on the tools, he has a team of two apprentices and two qualified carpenters. Anne is responsible for the background administration to keep projects ticking over, and a recent addition to the team was the couple’s daughter to help process the payroll. Matt also enjoys helping apprentices gain the necessary skills to work in the renovation space well. “We know this is the very best training ground for apprentices because its not cookie-cutter building we do. There’s a high level of problem solving, and for apprentices to learn these skills right from the start really stands them in good stead for their future careers.” Matt and Anne’s blended family live on an idyllic plot of land, which is home to 14,000 pine trees, a couple of horses, some sheep and three dogs. Part of their land is ecologically zoned, something the couple are tremendously proud of. Matt often takes one of the dogs to work. “These days it is Angel going to work. She’s adored by clients and suppliers alike, and takes her job of site security very seriously.” 586 Tremaine Ave, Palmerston North 06 355 4020 nebulite@xtra.co.nz www.nebulite.co.nz With over 30 years manufacturing experience, Nebulite Aluminium Palmerston North are proud to support Grantham Builders Proudly Supporting Grantham Builders We are a family-owned joinery business based in the Wellington region.
