38 | Young Hawera firm doing the groundwork Noonan Contracting now operates 12tonne, 13tonne, 20tonne, and 2.7tonne excavators, allowing the team to move efficiently between residential builds and substantial rural developments. Noonan Contracting T T Sue Russell “I wanted to advance and asked about buying a digger from the company I was working for. That conversation eventually turned into an opportunity to purchase the business. We took it over and haven’t looked back.” CONTRACTING As civil and earthworks activity continues to underpin both rural productivity and residential growth across South Taranaki, Hāwera based Noonan Contracting is playing an increasingly visible role in shaping the region’s infrastructure from the ground up. Founded just over three years ago by Jonno and Julie Noonan, Noonan Contracting has built a strong reputation for reliable, practical earthmoving solutions across rural, residential, and light commercial projects. From house site preparation to large scale rural upgrades, the company is steadily expanding its footprint across the district. Jonno’s pathway into business ownership followed more than a decade in the industry. He spent about 10 years with Downer Group, gaining formal qualifications and hands-on experience in civil work before moving into the rural contracting sector. “I was a contract operator for seven years and really enjoyed it,” Jonno says. “I wanted to advance and asked about buying a digger from the company I was working for. That conversation eventually turned into an opportunity to purchase the business. We took it over and haven’t looked back.” Since acquiring the company, Jonno has invested in expanding the fleet to support a broader range of projects. Noonan Contracting now operates 12tonne, 13tonne, 20tonne, and 2.7tonne excavators, allowing the team to move efficiently between residential builds and substantial rural developments. “The 12tonne and 13tonne machines suit residential work and lighter rural jobs. The 20tonne handles most of our farming projects, and the 2.7tonne is perfect for house sites, lawn prep and any other small residential work,” he says. That capability has positioned the company well in a region where contractors must adapt quickly between sectors. In one week, the team may complete a house site cut and foundation preparation, and in the next be on farm removing hedges, constructing races, upgrading culverts, or carrying out drainage improvements. Alongside residential work, the company continues to deliver farm infrastructure projects, including dairy shed site preparation, race construction, and ponds. Jonno says there has been renewed demand for rural upgrades as farmers address projects put on hold over recent years. The company offers a comprehensive range of services including excavation and site preparation, land clearing and grading, trenching and foundation digging, debris removal, pond and swimming pool excavation, driveway and pathway construction, and project planning. They also have trucks for carting, metal, topsoil and any other materials required that need carting. Jonno says his focus remains on quality workmanship, practical solutions, and delivering projects on time. “It is challenging running a business, but I enjoy helping people solve problems. Whether it is preparing the ground for a new home or improving infrastructure on a farm, we take pride in doing the job properly.” Noonan Contracting are your trusted Excavation experts.
