Anchored in the landscape, this modern family home combines timeless architectural character with practical liveability. Inspired by Central Otago’s distinctive architectural vernacular, the owners of this rural lifestyle block took their ideas for a pavilion-style home – complete with 35-degree roof pitch where possible – to Slate in late 2023. As a design-and-build construction firm, Slate Construction champions collaboration to create exceptional results. Kingsdale exemplifies this approach and ethos. Slate Studio and Slate Construction worked side by side with the client to shape the full design-and-build and deliver on their vision for a modern family home that could serve their needs for years to come. Form, function and cost were carefully balanced throughout, with intentional design principles guiding the evolution of this simple yet elegantly functional dwelling. “The clients in this case were very articulate, knew what they wanted and were very aware of their overall budget and wanting to make the best informed decisions they could within that,” says Heinrich Swartz, Slate Construction’s brand and marketing manager. “They’re absolutely stoked with their beautiful home – it has been an outstanding result for everyone.” Spanning 352sqm, the five-bedroom home is generously sized, yet volume has been cleverly managed to create a warm, welcoming feel. Entertaining is beautifully catered for, with a spacious formal lounge, generous open-plan living, and a large covered outdoor area with an open wood fire. At the heart of the home is the streamlined kitchen, complemented by a scullery that keeps the primary space looking tidy and refined. Providing a focal point for snug social gatherings are two beautiful stone veneer fireplaces, one inside and one outside. No matter the weather, this home is welldesigned to bring people together in comfort. With thermally broken Venta Omega aluminium joinery framing the sweeping country views and a Daikin central ducted system, this is an effortlessly warm and comfortable home throughout, year-round. “Accessibility was another key consideration, as a close family member uses a wheelchair,” says Heinrich. “Wider hallways and doorways and generously proportioned showers were intentionally incorporated for that reason. Along with big raking ceilings in the two gable ends, these features further reinforce that sense of generous, spacious living.” Completing the layout in this high-stud home are two ensuites plus a family bathroom and separate toilet, a dedicated office and a playroom, all in step with modern lifestyle needs. From the outside, Kingsdale has a clean, crisp and classic look. The materials palette includes a mix of Rockcote Graphex plaster, brushed shiplap weatherboards and Eldorado stone, all topped with durable Colorsteel Endura Rib roof. Meanwhile, 2026 is off to a busy start for the Slate Construction team. February marked their largest-ever single residential concrete pour in Manawatū, with over 32 trucks lined up for the job. Working closely with local developers and real estate agents across the central North Island, Slate is also developing a growing range of house-and-land packages. Plans for the future include more property development, and offering set plans to open up further choice and flexibility in the market.
