Once funding is approved construction is expected to take seven years to complete. There are also plans underway for a new purpose-built mental health facility with 28 beds, plus two low stimulus rooms. Later there is provision for four to eight beds to be added. Neil says the aim is to transform the way this service is delivered. “Our current mental health facilities have long been recognised as needing improvements. The new building will be welcoming, warm and make good use of natural light in order to enhance the therapeutic nature of spaces. “The new model of care will be culturally appropriate and offer flexibility for those in significant distress. The approach emphasises out-of-hospital prevention, promotion and community approaches, consistent with contemporary models of care.” The capital work projects’ expenditure is estimated at over half a billion dollars. Neil says the short-term projects are designed to get patients in and out of ED and relieve pressure at the front door leading into the more significant programme of works. Also included will be a series of changes to ventilation systems to ensure the existing hospital buildings are able to manage Covid-19 positive patients and be more resilient to future pandemic challenges. Infrastructure supporting all the projects is also being upgraded as part of the overall programme of works. Te Whatu Ora – MidCentral’s new EDOA/MAPU unit is well underway at the front of Palmerston North Hospital. Cranes on-site loading materials for Te Whatu Ora – MidCentral’s SPIRE project.
