Parts started last century as part of NZ’s maritime history, then NZ’s wood processing history, and now Rotorua’s tourism future. from page 38 Rotorua: Red Stag Timber REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Engineered timber products like glulam and CLT look beautiful and project that lovely warm feeling and so they are not only used, but also exposed in buildings like schools, work places, retirement homes and hospitals for the relief of stress and anxiety, while raising productivity and the general well-being of those inside. “If you can express as much of that mass timber as possible then you’re getting all those biophilic design advantages,” says Marty. Beyond doubt is Marty’s passion for Red Stag Timber and its transformation from business in receivership to a major player in the regional economy. “Red Stag is an amazing group of people and a positive culture that has come together to achieve phenomenal success in our industry and make a good contribution to the local community. The two biggest issues in the country are housing and the availability for timber for that, and also climate change. Sawmills are at the forefront of locking away carbon for decades or even centuries in the form of buildings.” Red Stag has three boilers that burn offcuts, bark and sawdust, and that heat is used to dry the timber as well as drive two turbines to create electricity, making it not only self-sufficient in energy, but actually exporting electricity back into the grid. “Because we don’t use fossil fuels to create electricity or heat, our carbon emissions are the lowest emissions in the sector. Wood is the best material for the climate that you can build with and the highest sequestration carbon material in New Zealand. That will put us in really good stead when the new regulations come in in 2024, and people have to start measuring their carbon, and reducing carbon in their buildings.” Red Stag is the largest private employer in the region and feels a strong responsibility to actively contribute to the community, by Proud to support Red Stag Timber with quality Sharpening and Saw Supply!
