It’s easy to dismiss someone but harder to try and change the behaviour that might be all they know and have always been allowed to do. So it’s been quite a journey to get people to look at things differently and respect each other. Norm started it off with just shaking everyone’s hands first thing in the morning which is around 6.30. It was elbows for a while but to this day it’s one of the things we do.” Luke credits Norm Hewitt’s work and influence on their internal culture with their recent winning of the Hynds Image Award at the 2022 Civil Contractors New Zealand Wellington/Wairarapa Awards. “That’s voted by your peers like your suppliers and key partners in the industry. They’re looking for the company that best represents what the industry is about, so that’s one I’m quite proud of,” says Luke. It seems obvious that the award they got at the same time recognising the exceptional job they did on Transmission Gully, the Category B Award for jobs between $500K and $2million, can trace its origins to the same source: highly motivated, skilled, teamwork. They came up with an innovative way to install the drains weighing 85kg each without the usual need for three guys to bend, lift, pivot, lower and secure them. Safer and quicker they installed 1.9 kilometres of drains in record time. “We had a six month programme which ended up with about nine weeks to finish around 80% of them and we really nailed the job. It’s all thanks to the guys on the ground,” says Luke.” PROFESSIONAL WELLINGTON HIAB We’ll Hook You Up PROUDTOBEASSOCIATEDWITHPCL CONTRACTING info@hammondcrane.co.nz | 027 4420 882 | www.hammondcrane.co.nz Operang throughout the Wellington and Horowhenua Mobile, onsite IT support for all your technology needs all over IT has been supporng PCL Contracng for several years— and we are proud to have improved their network capabilies over that me Call us to find out how we could also help you PCL Contracting’s work includes new roads and subdivisions.
