78 | ARCHITECTURE ADNZ: DCA Architects Hawke’s Bay growth area for DCA Virginia Wright “DCA have been working in education for a long time and we’ve got several projects underway for Kainga Ora in the Hawke’s Bay region as well as working with K3 Kahungunu Property.” Wellington (04) 384 9198 www.rlb.com Rider Levett Bucknall is proud to be supporting and providing Quantity Surveying & other construction cost management services for DCA ARCHITECTS Providing a seismic resilient, & efficient co-tenant Civic Administration Building. Supporting the enduring whanaungatanga between council and mana whenua of Taupō district. DCA Architects of Transformation has been in business for 26 years and established an additional office in Hawke’s Bay just on a year ago. With the new office came architect Marie Fleming and senior technician Dan Bristow-Smith, who have since been joined by technicians Ade Bolton and Beka Hurae. Together they bring the DCA team to 22 drawn together by a shared vision and the set of values that underpin it. “Our mission statement is ‘Transforming people’s lives through architecture,’ “says Marie, “and this is underpinned by six core values that really drive our architectural practice and inform all of the work that what we do.” The company values include the recognition that they are all passionate about design and love what they do. They outline the need to: listen first, design second; never stop learning so you remain relevant and future focused; value and work on relationships, whether with clients, suppliers or other team members; avoid defaulting to status quo by always asking questions; and design for the future of clients, people and the planet alike. As far as Marie is concerned these values sit behind their drive to always do an amazing job for their clients and being open to learning. “There is always something new that informs the work you’re doing. All of the team have ongoing professional development that relates to our work and is important to us.” Marie is DCA’s Environmental Design Manager, and she is also involved with the local building industry, establishing the Hawke’s Bay Sustainable Building Group and as a trustee for the local Environment Centre. The DCA value around designing for the future dovetails perfectly with Marie’s drive for sustainability. All four of the Hawke’s Bay team live locally and establishing the second office shows DCA`s commitment to the area, the work they were already doing there, and the number of jobs either on the horizon or already in the early stages. They’ve just finished the new Technology Block at Heretaunga Intermediate, construction is underway for Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Wānanga Whare Tapere o Takitumu, and Eskdale School with work at Hastings Boys School on the horizon. “We’re super-excited to be involved in the many long-standing projects we’ve got underway here, says Marie. “DCA have been working in education for a long time and we’ve got several projects underway for Kainga Ora in the Hawke’s Bay region as well as working with K3 Kahungunu Property.” Add to that DCA’s expertise in civic design, including Te Whare Hono o Tūwharetoa (Taupo Civic Administration Building), that is currently in detailed design, as well as their track record in health, hospitality and residential buildings, and it’s clear that the Hawke’s Bay office is ready for whatever projects come along. “We can see a number of projects coming on in the future which we can progress out of Hawke’s Bay, and we’re looking for more. It’s fantastic working locally, knowing all the local consultants and contractors. We all have pre-existing relationships with them, so that if something happens on-site we can just pop down and deal with it which builds good relationships with the entire project team as well,” says Marie. It’s those relationships, and the quality of the work that results, which mean that DCA Hawke’s Bay will be looking to expand in the near future as more of their projects get underway. businesscentral businesscentral Each edition priority delivered to your door. .
