Thirty years later, he and wife Anne are proud to be running their own boutique studio in Tawa, Rayner Architectural Design Ltd. His long experience in the architectural design field gives him a good perspective on the profession and what it offers young people thinking about this as a career option. “It’s a good career path,” he says. “Once you know how it all works, there are so many different options that open up. You could become a QS, a site manager, or a sales rep. There is a big range of possibilities.” For Grant, though, seeing his own designs come to fruition is what he enjoys the most. “Seeing that finished product and knowing that you’re providing a great service is hugely rewarding. “That’s the case even on smaller jobs. Simple changes can make a massive difference to the use of space in a home. It’s lovely seeing people’s reactions once a project is finished.” As well as being a member of ADNZ, Grant is a licensed building practitioner. Rayner Architectural Design offers the full range of architectural design and documentation services required to take an initial brief through to developed design and consent. “It’s a good career path. Once you know how it all works, there are so many different options that open up.” If required, the studio will work with other project partners on the client’s behalf to obtain all the information needed for a successful project. “We find most of our work comes as a result of references from previous clients. What people really appreciate is how we lay out a clear plan right from that first meeting. “If people know what to expect from the outset, the whole process runs much more smoothly.” Grant first studied architectural draughting at polytechnic in the Waikato and ended his first year in 1991 as the top student. Over the following three years, he combined study with a draughting cadetship with Stiles and Hooker Ltd, a Hamilton-based engineering and architecture firm. “By my early 20s I was doing construction administration for education projects and running site meetings. That taught me a lot about how to communicate with builders and bring in their ideas and solutions too. It’s something I’ve really carried forward.” After 12 years with Stiles and Hooker, Grant moved to Pynenburg & Collins Architects Ltd in Wellington as a team leader and CAD manager. In 2014, he then took up a draughting job with Moore Design, checking and overseeing documentation. All that experience came together in 2017 when he and Anne started Rayner Architectural Design, with Anne leading accounts and administration. Rayner Architectural Design specialises in residential additions and alterations, as well as new home projects. Grant also has a strong track work in commercial design work for kindergartens. At the 2021 Wellington/Wairarapa Regional ADNZ Resene Architectural Design Awards, Rayner Architectural Design received a Highly Commended Award for Matariki Kindergarten, Trentham. As an ADNZ member, Grant is part of a supportive community of architectural design professionals who work together to encourage excellence. “ADNZ can help with templates and contracts. They provide professional development and offer an online forum that is very constructive. Belonging to a professional organisation like this is real peace of mind for the client too.” RENOVAT IONS | NEW BU I LDS E: of fice@efconstruction.co.nz P: 027 412 2088 www.efconstruction.co.nz Unique electrical solutions for beautiful places and practical spaces Family-owned and operated Electrician's servicing the Porirua + Greater Wellington region 04 235 9822 | info@allstar.net.nz www.allstar.net.nz Anne and Grant Rayner; “Most of our work comes as a result of references from previous clients.”
