Senior QS, Arun Keerthi has been with the business six years and says usually Lobell is a project’s main contractor, however at times will work alongside other main contractors when the project calls for additional staff and resources. “I take care of estimating and new tenders and altogether we have a team of about 35 staff on board. It means we can deliver projects, now upward of $20million,” says Arun. Asked how business has been through the challenges COVID has brought, Arun says the systems and scale of the company have enabled Lobell Construction to proceed relatively smoothly with projects across its desk. “There won’t be any Gib issue from about September with production here in New Zealand increasing. There’s also an alternative Gib product from Indonesia which meets the specifications for use here which is good.” Lobell Construction has been operating since 1983, initially as Lue Shaw Builders. The company tends to concentrate on projects in and around Hamilton to an area of about 50km from the city. Projects are as varied as the list is long. Some examples are the new Canoe Racing NZ facility at Lake Karapiro, near Cambridge, a new toilet block at Raglan’s Ngaranui Beach, a new privately operated crematorium in Hamilton’s Te Rapa north, a new classroom block and modification to some existing classroom at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in the city’s inner suburb of Fairfield. The company is also engaged as a sub-contractor at the large Sleepyhead Estate currently under construction at Ohinewai and is also engaged in a new commercial centre at Te Kauwhata, involving construction of four buildings. There has been measured growth in the company over the years, as it has acquired the human resources with the right skills to take on larger and more complex projects. A new office and warehouse in Hamilton’s Northgate Industrial quarter was on Arun’s desk. He says it’s the variety of work and the professional culture of the team that most attracted him to the company. “The way the company works with its clients to smoothly deliver projects is a strength. Also the Directors and Managing Director are very cool people with great energy for their work.” Having completed Stage 1 of Hillcrest Apartments, near the University in 2020, work is about to get underway of Stage 2, a 15 apartment two-storey complex. Arun says, given the company’s history with the developers he
