94 | BUILDING Cohesive Construction: Ag Trans Hawera ‘Significant building’ for Sth Taranaki Richard Loader Cohesive Construction – Taranaki has earned the honour of building the very first commercial structure in Hawera’s South Taranaki Business Park, and it is impressive both in terms of its size, and its distinctive look and feel. Developed by local businessman CJ Mahony, and purpose built for tenant Total Windows and Doors, the Wide Span building consists of a warehouse/workshop encompassing 2788sqm, along with an adjoining 300sqm north facing office at the front. In selecting Cohesive Construction to carry out the design and build project, CJ says he particularly wanted the benefit of a clear span building, to ensure that it was future proofed. “For South Taranaki, this is a very significant building. Most of the commercial buildings in the region have been between 400sqm and perhaps 1000sqm. So something in that 3000sqm range stands out in the local area. The building has been designed to look like a smart structure, and not just a tin shed.” The adjoining office has been designed to visually stands out from the main structure, and is clad in Innowood, a sustainable cedar product, that maintains its colour and characteristics for life without maintenance. Floor to ceiling windows frame each side of the office and the office roof will also have solar panels. The main structure, which rises to 10.2 metres at its highest point and drops down to 7.6 metres, is clad in dark Grey Friars colour steel cladding, along with concrete panels that go up to 2.2 metres high on three sides. Six floor to ceiling windows allow natural light to flood the workspace, and showcase the business within, while a canopy running along the western side of the building provides weather protection over a load-out area. Cohesive Construction designs and builds cutting-edge commercial, industrial, and residential projects across New Zealand. They offer a wide range of in-house services including design, quantity surveying, construction, and project management. Specialising in truly customised buildings; from aircraft hangars to load out facilities; honey factories to salmon hatcheries; packhouses to warehousing, the team at Cohesive Construction have built them all. “We construct over four hundred buildings a year,” says Managing Director Paul Lynch. “Our customers can feel confident in knowing they are building with a professional and experienced team that understands the materials and building methods they are presenting.” Cohesive Construction was established in 2010, when the Lynch family saw a need for quality steel framed sheds in the Canterbury region, which led to the purchase of the South Island franchise of Wide Span Sheds. Initially starting in the Canterbury region with a small office, the company quickly grew to service all the South Island and over the last few years branches have been opened in major towns throughout the country. In 2021, the ‘Cohesive’ brand was launched to better reflect the company’s capabilities and expansion into the commercial and residential markets. Just under a year ago, the Cohesive Group purchased the Wide Span franchise rights to operate in the wider Taranaki region. Cohesive Group had purchased the Waikato and Wellington Wide Span franchises earlier in 2021 and wanted to continue their success in the Taranaki and New Plymouth regions. With a few commercial buildings already starting in both Taranaki and New Plymouth the team hit ground running, and sales have continued ever since. Cohesive Group are the sole suppliers of Wide Span Sheds in the South Island and much of the North. “We wanted to give the region a one-stop-shop business that could deliver premium buildings across all sectors, and because everything we do is in-house we also offer a large number of employment opportunities to the local community” says Paul.
