Company general manager Bailey Gair says for a smaller company SCL Civil Works punches well above its weight. “This means clients experience a personal service with all the benefits of working with a larger company when it comes to skills and processes,” she says. The company was started in 2021 by Mike Job, Quentin Welch and Mike Knight, all experienced contractors with strong project management backgrounds. The aim was to raise the bar in delivering professional contracting services, says Bailey, although not without its challenges as an emerging business in a stretched labour market. “But we know how to work as part of a team and what it takes to deliver large projects. Through experience, we understand the stumbling blocks and the path to success,” she says. With over two decades of expertise in the civil construction sector, Bailey says that Mike, who is at the helm of the company on a daily basis, is widely respected within Hawke’s Bay and across New Zealand. Armed with a Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Civil), his technical expertise and project management skills have been instrumental in the company’s ability to delivering both small and large-scale civil projects. He is backed by a team of skilled contractors allowing SCL Civil Works to offer a diverse range of services catering to commercial, residential, industrial and rural property development projects. It undertakes diverse private owner projects through to local and central government projects, from site preparations for schools, new pedestrian walking, and cycle pathways to Three Waters infrastructure. Bailey says that the fact that SCL Civil Works offers a comprehensive suite of civil construction services and infrastructure products sets it apart from competitors. The company’s expertise extends to earthworks where it prepares land for residential subdivisions, new services provisions and large-scale commercial or industrial sites. With drainage and Three Waters projects currently under the spotlight in Hawke’s Bay, SCL Civil Works has the skills to get the job done. Bailey says that with a focus on delivering exceptional results, the company collaborates with local councils and other contracting firms to address drinking water, stormwater, and wastewater needs. The company’s general contracting services cater to residential, industrial and commercial land projects. “By maximising the potential of each project and employing innovative thinking, SCL Civil Works aims to reduce costs and achieve desired outcomes,” explains Bailey. Ground improvement and maintenance are also part of the company’s comprehensive suite of offerings, with regular maintenance plans developed to ensure the longevity of the projects. With a lot of building work underway in the region, SCL Civil Works is at the forefront of residential development and subdivisions, says Bailey, where it provides everything from earthworks to internal roading, creating quality developments. Rural lifestyle blocks and farm park subdivisions are not left behind. Bailey says that SCL Civil Works can guide property owners in identifying the most suitable sites and provide a program of civil works to bring their vision to life. “As demand grows for new commercial and industrial sites in Hawke’s Bay, SCL Civil Works is playing a pivotal role in fulfilling those needs. From land preparation to installation and connection of services, we are proud to be contributing to the region’s growth and development.” The company is currently working on several noteworthy projects including the Turners & Growers industrial packhouse, the largest in Australasia, says Bailey. SCL Civil Works is completing all of the civil works and drainage. It is also undertaking large culvert replacement work as part of the cyclone clean up for a forestry client, residential development civil works at Ikanui Road, Hastings, and the civil works for the New World in Havelock North for Stead Construction.
