The venture reflects the trust’s commitment to providing high-quality housing and care for the elderly while contributing to the local community, says one of the directors of Hastings District Masonic Properties Ltd Roger Sinclair. “The St Aubyn Village Estate offers residents a unique living experience, emphasising community engagement and a care-free lifestyle. It is more than just a housing complex; it is a community designed to foster social interaction and shared experiences among its residents. It’s been very popular,” he says. The village has been built on the site of the former St Aubyn’s St winery restaurant. It has a rich history dating back 113 years after Spanish migrant Anthony Joseph Vidal first planted grapes and established the pioneering Vidal Estate vineyard in Hastings. The architect-designed homes are nestled in beautiful grounds and surrounded by social hubs, creating an environment that encourages participation in various activities and pursuits. State-of-the-art security measures provide peace of mind to residents, allowing them to travel and explore their interests, knowing their homes are safe and monitored round the clock by professionals. One of the standout features of the St Aubyn Village Estate is the range of communal facilities available to residents, says Roger. A park-like communal space with native gardens provides a serene and peaceful environment. The estate also boasts communal vegetable gardens, promoting a healthy lifestyle and encouraging residents to engage in gardening activities. A hobby shed and a community café are also exclusively available for residents and their guests, further enhancing the sense of community within the estate, says Roger. The Hastings District Masonic Trust has been a provider of aged care accommodation for independent individuals in the Heretaunga area for over 50 years. Operating on charitable principles, the trust aims to break even without generating profits. The retirement villages owned by the trust offer an affordable option for older residents, ensuring their economic wellbeing while providing independence, security, and proximity to family and friends. The trust is a member of the Retirement Villages Association and the interests of the residents are protected by the appointment of an independent Statutory Supervisor. The Masonic Village Trust operates both Masonic Care Limited and Masonic Village Limited. Roger says that ‘Our community. Our family. Our compassion’ are the three tenets driving Freemasonry in New Zealand today and also reflect everything it does for its residents. “All our Masonic retirement communities and rest homes across New Zealand are unique to their community and are built to reflect the community’s local identify and profile,” says Roger. He says all staff at the care facilities are committed to our residents’ wellbeing and include registered and enrolled nurses, physiotherapists, occupational, diversional and speech therapists and qualified caregivers. “All are encouraged and enabled to be involved in training and on-going professional development. This ensures people receive the very best care and attention possible.” Occupancy is based on two formulae – an Occupation Right Agreement (ORA), which requires a capital payment, and rental accommodation at prices usually below median market rates. Roger says that Masonic villages are not just less expensive than their commercial counterparts, they are usually smaller and more intimate than commercial villages and the residents tend to know each other, which creates a more vibrant and supportive community. While the primary objective of the trust is to develop and manage retirement villages, it also extends its support to the elderly, ill, or disabled through care and support services. The trust also actively contributes to the community by supporting and promoting various projects, research and charitable causes. Roger says the trust’s commitment to improving the lives of individuals and advancing the welfare of the community sets it apart. In addition to the St Aubyn Village Estate, the Hastings District Masonic Trust operates numerous housing complexes in and around Hastings, Havelock North, and Waipawa. The trust’s expansion also includes a new development in Waipawa, which offers 12 units. This adds to the trust’s existing accommodation units at various locations.
