A landlord/investor/developer, Domain Holdings purchased the liquidated Carter Holt Sawmill in Putaruru, and more recently a second sawmill in Domain Road, developing both as industrial rental properties, and that has led to the development of two residential subdivisions in the township. “What has come out of the industrial developments is that many of the tenants will be coming from out of town and placing managers in those businesses, which poses the question, where do the managers live? “The reason that businesses were drawn to Putaruru was not so much that the industrial development is there, but that the commercial rents we charge are far more economic than what is available in Tauranga, Hamilton and Cambridge. “That made my business partner Dave Macfarlane and me aware that there was a chronic shortage of housing in Putaruru. “Out of that grew an opportunity to resolve our own problem, while also doing some more good for the village, by creating a residential development at a much more economic rate than the larger areas.”
