Good staff coupled with good machinery is what makes Waipukearau’s’ HES Earthmoving the success it is today. The company was set up in 2007 by Hayden and Myrtle Satherley and operates across a number of sectors including roading, forestry, council work, general farm work, aggregate supply and metal cartage with a team of around 50 staff. Hayden grew up in the earthmoving industry with both his father and grandfather having earthmoving companies of their own. “Hayden just loves bulk earthmoving and we have many highly experienced machinery and vehicle operators,” says Myrtle. “We have so much gratitude for our staff. We have an awesome team who all contribute to making what we do possible.” Myrtle says when a new employee is taken on they begin by looking after the vehicles when they return to the yard, before going out in the field to discover what they are passionate about. “While Hayden looks after the operations, I oversee the business. We have three managers in charge of key areas and Hayden links in with these people daily.” The company’s large fleet includes 19 diggers, 6 bulldozers, 12 Loaders, 18 Trucks and trailers, Transporters, 9 Dumptrucks, tractors and scoops, rollers, graders, screens, crushers and some hired machines/plant. The company has two workshops and employs four mechanics to ensure the fleet is kept up to scratch. “We replace our fleet often and ensure we look after what we own really well. We are very familiar with the industries we work in and that experience underpins our reputation and our success.” As well as it’s own staff, HES also engages a number of of sub-contractors, with Damian Edwards the main sub-contractor covering logistics and trucks. Since Cyclone Gabrielle left its trail of destruction the company has been busy fixing stop banks in Hawke’s Bay, and Myrtle says it has been a humbling experience to repair the e damage. “Another major project we are working on at the moment is the Marainanga Gorge. We have an awesome team out there who are rebuilding the road.” The project includes extracting large rock from the river, laying geofabric along with gabion, carted from the company’s own quarry, to raise the height to its final level. HES is enjoying all the current projects it is undertaking and look forward to the next.
