The scheme ensures certified New Zealand fabricators manufacture structural steelwork according to international best practice and SFC certified fabricators must demonstrate to an independent auditing body that they have the appropriate quality management systems in place to control the critical fabrication processes. C & R Engineering has held the CC2 qualification since 2021 but the CC3 qualification is a step up and shows the company has the right procedures and skills to undertake multi-storey projects over two levels high. “Our core value and company vision is to be the best at what we do and to have a reputation in the market for being the premium structural steel fabricator in the greater Manawatū, producing quality product, on time and on budget,” says Craig. Craig’s parents Ross and Carol started the company and Craig began working at C & R Engineering after schools and on Saturday mornings sweeping the floor when he was 12. When he was 20 his parents gave him the opportunity to become an apprentice and learn the trade. Craig and Jaclyn purchased the business in 2013. Both Jaclyn and Craig credit their skilled team of around 20 staff as being the cornerstone of the company’s success. Craig leads the day to day running of the business alongside operations manager William Kuiti, who has extensive industry experience in both Australia and New Zealand and was employed in 2020 to help the business grow. Nigel Sturgeon is the project manager and joined the team in 2022 bringing valuable knowledge and experience. Jaclyn looks after the running of the office and health and safety. C & R Engineering specialises in mild steel fabrication with a focus on the commercial market. Craig says there is no job is too big or too small and pride is taken in providing a complete service, setting the bar locally with customers in terms of service, quality and health and safety standards. This philosophy also extends to the team. “We want to be a known locally as a top employer that values and looks after staff and families,” says Craig. “We are committed to providing all employees with the equipment and training to enable them to complete their jobs to high standard and maintaining a safe and healthy working environment for the health and safety of our employees and other persons in the work place. We are SiteWise Gold accredited.” All products are made locally in Palmerston North, from either the customer’s design or C & R Engineering can assist with the whole process from start to finish. Craig says the market has been busy and C & R Engineering has been involved in a wide array of projects including producing the structural steel for 667 Tremaine Avenue, the second stage of a multi tenant commercial building being built by Humphries Construction. Other recent structural steel projects include Taihape amenities for W&W Construction, a redevelopment at the netball courts in Taihape being undertaken by the local council. “This project was challenging during the design phase with complex connections and troubleshooting to ensure buildability while still being practical and durable,” explains Craig. C & R Engineering also produced the structural steel for a project at Turitea Pa, a PNCC designed and run project. “There we a number of complex connection details which needed to be worked through in the design phase to ensure buildability. This platform has a stunning view of the Manawatū River and is located along a popular walking and biking trail alongside the river.” At the end of 2022 C & R Engineering completed a structural steel project in Taupo at Wairoa House. The project was situated on the busy Spa Road and was a vastly different build to what C & R Engineering was normally used to. “This building was constructed using timber glulam portal frames connected using big fish plates in the knees and apex of the portal. The steel roof structure was then assembled onto this timber structure and the large, curved façade beams give this building a very unique look,” says Craig. “It really shows the ability of the C & R Engineering team to deliver to client requirements no matter what the project.” Current projects include a dog pound structure for Palmerston North City Council, a two-storey apartment blocks in Karori and various seismic strengthening projects including for Palmerston North police station, Foodstuffs and Central Energy Trust Arena in Palmerston North.
