Established in 1953, the locally owned group has grown and diversified its services over the decades, leaving an indelible mark on the communities it serves, says managing director Robert Gunn. He attributes its success to the unwavering loyalty of its customers: “Reaching this milestone is an indication of the fact we give our customers good service resulting in loyalty. We are dealing with three generations of some customers.” Alfred Downs founded Alf Downs Limited on April 1, 1953. In 1960 Alf’s son Kelvin joined the company as an apprentice electrician and became a partner in the business in 1970. Robert Gunn joined the firm in 1976 as an apprentice electrician serving under both Kelvin and Alf. He became a partner in the business in 1990 and managing director in 2001. Today The Downs Group encompasses several specialised companies, each playing a crucial role. First is Alf Downs Contracting delivering electrical services that span commercial, industrial and domestic projects. Robert says the team of qualified electricians has earned a reputation for delivering top-notch service and maintaining long-term relationships with customers. Alf Downs Street Lighting, another key player in the group, has been illuminating the region’s landscapes with expertise and creativity. Projects include the lighting of He Ara Kotahi in Palmerston North, an eye catching walkway bridge, and various park lighting installations. The company’s contribution to architectural lighting also enriches private spaces as well as enhancing safety. ADS Lines is the powerhouse behind power line work, with a portfolio that includes overhead and underground lines, as well as subdivisions. ADG Mechanical, specialising in pipe work, internal reticulation, water and sewer treatment, has contributed significantly to projects throughout the region. Robert says all companies in the group work in together on various projects offering clients a complete service. He says the group has played a vital role in sustaining local industries and communities. As a major employer in the region, with a role of around 35 staff, Robert says the group is dedicated to providing opportunities and nurturing young talent. “We have a lot of young apprentices – normally four to five at any one time. This dedication to fostering new skills ensures that The Downs Group continues to grow and evolve,” he says. From its base in Marton, the group’s reach extends across the Rangitikei and Manawatū regions and sometimes further afield, with projects even completed in the Chatham Islands and Australia. The group’s reputation as problem-solvers precedes it and people come to it seeking solutions to their issues. “We look at building long-term relationships with every customer,” says Robert, underlining the group’s commitment to excellence. Beyond its professional accomplishments, The Downs Group is committed to living by a set of values that reflect its dedication to economic, social, and environmental responsibilities, says Robert. These values include a focus on growth, empowerment, integrity, teamwork, excellence, health and safety, building strong relationships, embracing diversity, and ensuring long-term sustainability. Giving back to the communities it works in is a priority for The Downs Group. The group proudly sponsors various charitable organisations, groups, clubs, and events, affirming its commitment to being an active and responsible member of the community.
