The supervisors’ job is to ensure the work is up to standard and that it’s getting done in a suitable time. You are only as good as your last job, and we try to do every job to the same high standard. The moment your standard drops is the time you stop getting more work.” Evan irst started contract building in his own right in 1995, but it wasn’t till 2008 that Dimond Design was registered as a company and began contracting to tier one companies like Mainzeal and Fletchers, doing interior itouts. “Over the last ifteen years we’ve progressively evolved from just doing interior itouts to include full construction projects like Stewart Dawson’s new building in Wellington. We don’t become involved in concrete work or windows, but we do everything else including timber framing, cladding, and itout works.” Working solely around Wellington’s CBD, Evan says Dimond Design has been operating for many years now, earning a reputation for quality workmanship and that is re lected in the company frequently being engaged by lead contractors on projects around town. “We’re mainly contracting to the major construction companies like McKee Fehl Constructors, who were the main contractors for the Stewart Dawson building, and we have done a lot of work for LT McGuinness Ltd. In the past we’ve worked for Naylor Love. We did the Gallipoli itout at Te Papa many years ago. Currently we’re doing a lot of kitchen installations for Ferndale Furniture, and Jones & Sandford Joinery. We specialise in aluminium itouts and so we have very good inishing carpenters.” With eighteen sta including senior foremen Rob Watson and Jason Grey, quali ied tradesmen, six apprentices and a number of skilled hammer hands, Dimond Design is well equipped to undertake whatever projects come along. “Our projects include commercial construction, o ice itouts including aluminium walls, glazing, making and installing aluminium doors. We also do residential joinery installs, including kitchens, feature panelling and ceilings. In the last couple of years we’ve built a lot of medium and high density apartment buildings. We’re just inishing a twelve-storey social housing apartment block for McKee Fehl at the moment.” Dimond Design’s work on the Stewart Dawson redevelopment included the base build, timber framing, external cladding, interior itouts, the shop fronts at the end, and the two roofs.
