Company marketing manager Jane Tohill says the business has helped more Kiwis learn to swim than any other swim school in the country. “Since 1973 we have been dedicated to the essential task of helping people of all ages to become confident, competent swimmers,” she says. The business is still strongly family owned and operated. Hilton Brown was a competitive swimmer who represented New Zealand and established his first learn to swim programme in Auckland. Jane says Hilton is a legend with regards to swimming in New Zealand and has been awarded the NZ Coach of the Year title three times throughout his esteemed coaching career. While he has ‘retired’ from the business, Hilton still plays an active part as director while his son Andrew takes on the role of director and general manager and daughter Ingrid is the company’s training and programme manager. Both are likewise highly respected in the field. Andrew swam competitively for over 10 years and has a background in business and finance. Ingrid looks after the company’s inhouse training programmes, teacher assessments and processes. Jane says that Ingrid has a wealth of knowledge and is constantly refining and improving the ways in which Hilton Brown Swimming teaches. A team of around 300 staff supports them. The company offers infant, pre-school, school age, stroke and adult swim programmes via eight swim schools throughout the North Island located in Albany, Newmarket, One Tree Hill and Hobsonville in Auckland, Chartwell and Te Rapa in Hamilton, Palmerston North and Havelock North. The company continues to invest and recently opened a brand new purpose built facility in Te Rapa, Hamilton as an addition to its Chartwell facility. The design was based on the company’s successful custom designed facility in Hobsonville, which opened in 2018. Albany was the first purpose built facility and Jane says this is a direction the company will continue to go down due to the superior customer experience it offers, “We took over our Chartwell facility decade ago and it was one of our busiest pools. With the population growth that the Waikato has seen over the last decade, we realised an additional facility would be beneficial in Hamilton,” explains Jane. Opening in March 2022, last month the Te Rapa facility, built by Fosters Construction, hit 1000 swimmers per week. “It’s a beautiful facility and people really love it,” says Jane. With a water temperature of 32 degrees,
