The best practice approach of Mastercraft Kitchens Palmerston North - Kitchens by Healey is providing real benefits to clients, staff, and now the environment as 125 years of combined industry experience puts the company at the forefront of industry standards and operational procedures. Started by Peter and Sue Healey in 2003, Kitchens by Healey has gained a reputation for providing only the best advice when planning a new kitchen. Joining the Mastercraft licensee group in 2009, Peter and Sue are part of a hand-selected group of independent joiners with the backing of a national support office and a shared mission to become New Zealand’s most trusted kitchens brand. Joining the business as general manager in 2019 was Peter and Sue’s daughter Kristine Holmes. Today Kristine is President of Registered Master Joiner’s Central branch and is immensely passionate about the joinery industry and the family business. As Peter celebrates an impressive 51 years of industry service this year, he continues to play a mentoring role at Mastercraft Kitchens Palmerston North - Kitchens by Healey, guiding not only his amazing designers and production team, but also mentoring Kristine in running the business. Old and new blood combine coherently to bring out the best in Mastercraft Kitchens Palmerston North - Kitchens by Healey. When Kristine wanted to modernise the design programme to be able to supply photo realistic renders to clients, Peter took some convincing. Once Peter was onboard, he invested in the industry-leading design and manufacturing CNC software solution Cabinet Vision. “From there, he’s been all over it,” Kristine says. “It was Dad who instated that we get virtual reality (VR) technology as soon as it became available, which has been an absolute game changer. When our clients can’t decide on colours, they can put the goggles on and see all the different options. When they are asking for something that we believe will not function well, they can stand in the space and see how it feels. At the end of the day we give our clients what they want, but this technology helps to confirm if what they think they want is what they actually want. They are making a huge investment and we don’t want them to have any regrets.” As a family business, the team at Mastercraft Kitchens Palmerston North - Kitchens by Healey are like extended family for the Healeys and they are concerned with ensuring their safety, health, and happiness in the workplace. When the results of a recent air quality test showed too much dust, the family brought in more machinery with dust reduction capability. All staff undergo continued professional development while employed by Mastercraft Kitchens Palmerston North - Kitchens by Healey. Recent courses include time management and leadership training and a Cabinet Vision training day. Kristine says business owners should be looking at professional development of their staff as an investment rather than an expense. “Our people always come back from training with at least one golden nugget of information that makes them more effective, more efficient, less stressed, and happier in their work. Those are the kinds of returns we like to see.” Now tackling its environmental obligations head-on, Mastercraft Kitchens Palmerston North - Kitchens by Healey is investing in solar panels for a big reduction in electricity consumption. Kristine says the joinery industry has a large carbon footprint due to leftover materials which are unable to be recycled, but Mastercraft Kitchens Palmerston North - Kitchens by Healey is committed to reducing its emissions by other methods.
