108 | Peter said the company aimed for high-end and architecturally designed projects, and see projects through from start to completion. “Once we get on the site, we stay on the site. “We do everything. We do the house, the grounds, swimming pools, tennis courts ... It’s the whole project, and we’ve got subbies that have been hugely supportive over the years and will work with us to do the whole project.” BUILDING Maulder Builders T T Rosa Watson A commitment to quality paying off Maulder Builders has grown to a team of 25 working on up to four projects at a time. After 40 years in operation, Havelock North-based construction company Maulder Builders has firmly established itself in the high-end space of the local construction scene. The company has been operating for 43 years, with founder Peter Maulder the sole worker for the first 17 years. But in 1998 the business had reached a point where it needed staff to move forward. “And from there we just quietly grew,” Peter tells Business Central. Maulder Builders has grown to a team of 25 working on up to four projects at a time. Each project takes around 18 months to complete, Peter said. Recent projects include a 350spm, 40m long home on Burbury Ridge, and a 450sqm home on Millars Road that recently won an architecture award. Over time the firm has built strong connections in the community so much so there’s no need to tender for jobs, Peter said. “We know where we sit. We aim for quality. It suits us more than tendering.” In 2016, Peter had a serious accident that might have spelled the end of some contractors. He fell from a ceiling, breaking his back and almost becoming paralysed. But surgery in Christchurch “got me moving pretty quick”, Peter said. It was up to a year before he fully recuperated.
