This investment has included purchasing Te Matai Quarry and advancing its plant, equipment and people. “We’re long term; we’re here to stay. We’ve always been a proudly Manawatu business,” says James. A significant example of this was the new head office, workshop and training facility for Higgins Family Holdings Ltd on El Prado Drive, Palmerston North at the Manawatu Business Park. Constructed by local builder Colspec Construction, the four Green Star rated project recently took out gold at the New Zealand Commercial Project Awards and was a finalist in the 2023 Timber Design Awards Hybrid Building Category. A key driver of the design by Novak+Middleton was to showcase concrete as a material beyond the perception of being used for structure and showcased its beauty and versatility as a finishing material. The result is a striking building that adds real value to the Manawatu commercial landscape. Higgins Concrete provides quality concrete and service across the lower North Island and upper South Island operating with over 90 concrete and aggregate trucks and cement tankers. Alongside Higgins Concrete, the wider Higgins Family Holdings group of companies comprises Counties Ready Mix in Drury, Supacrete in Tauranga, and five Hirock quarries located around the lower North Island. This has seen Higgins Concrete operate at the heart of major infrastructure projects as well as smaller scale jobs, always with a commitment to service, quality and value. Over the years the company has been involved in many large projects around the regions including the new Turitea Windfarm in the Manawatu, the Bowen Campus in Wellington and the Olive Estate Lifestyle Village in Nelson.
