JOINERY Fusion Joinery Ltd T T Russell Fredric “Much of what we do bespoke; we still use all the old woodwork machines all the time.” Fusion Joinery offers traditional and contemporary skills combined with an incredible choice of materials and hardware to create something truly unique to each client. The busy Napier company is co-owned by directors Thaine Newport and Jeff Gathorne-Young who are celebrating 10 years of operation this year. Thaine reflects on how fast the past decade has gone and of the loyalty of their seven staff who include his mother, April Newport, who handles administration. “One of our youngest guys who is qualified now, he was our first apprentice. Our workshop team leader, he worked with us early on and he left for a couple years, and then he came back because he couldn’t find another environment the same as here. Our core workshop staff have been associated with us the entire time.” Thaine’s original trade background is in cabinet making and he only just completed his joinery qualification two years ago after 21 years in the industry. He was ‘arm-twisted’ to become a partner in the business by Jeff who started Fusion Joinery as a sole operator. “He hassled me for a few years to come and join him because we worked together previously in differently businesses. Once I came in we started building the business straight away. Within a couple of months we had one employee and within a year we had an apprentice.” In their respective roles, Jeff takes care of the workshop and production side while Thaine’s responsibilities in the front end includes site measuring, design and customer service. Thaine believes that cabinet makers are inherently fussy when it comes to attention to detail, but in the business overall which does not have a computerised CNC machine, its equipment lends itself well to old-school craftsmanship. “Much of what we do bespoke; we still use all the old woodwork machines all the time.” With the huge range of timbers, materials and hardware available, including some that have become more readily available during the past decade, Fusion Joinery can create joinery, cabinetry and other elements to suit every preference and need, as well as build stairways, whether modest and purely functional or that make an impressive grand design statement. Fusion Joinery can provide a design based on a client’s ideas, or work with architectural designs provided. “We always start with their wish list and just revolve around that. Once we get the basic layout working then we can add the design elements that creates that special uniqueness.” Websites like Pinterest are a great resource for ideas and themes, whether modern, traditional, Scandinavian or anything else, Thaine says. “If I’m involved early enough then I will basically help with the entire design whether it’s splashbacks, flooring, lighting, the whole lot.” Thaine and Jeff are grateful for the support they have had from their staff, suppliers, and clients for whom they aim to provide the best possible value; it is these key relationships that have made the business what it is. “We’re still very busy and we’re really happy with where we’re placed in the market,” Thaine says. “The last two or three years have been pretty amazing, it’s been awesome. “Any business is to do with people. All the other joineries can access exactly the same products as we can access. To us it’s about adding value, but it’s also about having good relationships with people. That’s totally key.” Int.
