| 133 Martinborough Golf Club COMMUNITY Tailored packages for businesses The new clubhouse will be a much stronger building at over 150 per cent of the Building Code. T T Richard Loader Martinborough Golf Club is offering businesses a range of creative ways to connect with its members, visitors and the wider Wellington golfing community. “We’re making up partner packages for business that are tailored to their business and customers, so we really offer targeted value,” says committee member Emily Loughnan. “It might include golf membership, naming rights to events, signage, green fees for guests and great promotional stories about what the business offers. No two are the same; it’s really about making sure the business gets what it needs. A recent example is Paterson & Co, which enjoyed a great social media response to a story about its new sign on the 8th tee and a link to houses for sale near the golf course.” The committee is undertaking the offering to raise funds for its new clubhouse and community facility. The build is underway but still needs support. “Our old clubhouse was earthquake prone and too small,” says another committee member, Karen Stephens. “The new facility is underway and being built by Holmes Construction which have provided a lot of support for community projects.” The new clubhouse will be a much stronger building at over 150 per cent of the Building Code. The building will be multipurpose, for community to use as meeting venue or for functions, as well as potentially acting as a Civil Defence hub. The club has a long history. It first started in August 1908 with 10 people attending a meeting in the Oddfellows Hall to set up the club. It moved around various members’ properties with play taking place on their lawns. It also moved to the Huangarua River at one stage but the land was used for grazing, which meant the club had to close for lambing and the summer months. It was in 1924 that first clubhouse was built, with six members each providing 100 pounds for its construction. In 1948: Members lobbied the Racecourse Trustees (Featherston County Council) for the lease of the land on Todds and Hinekura Road and the new course there was officially opened in April. In 1974 disaster struck when the clubhouse was destroyed by an arsonist. But the club carried on from a temporary building until a new permanent clubhouse was built. In 2015 the club received notification that the clubhouse was registered as an unsafe structure. Both Emily and Karen say the club is growing, with a significant milestone being the merger with the Featherston Golf Club a few years ago and most recently a reciprocal arrangement with the Miramar Golf Club in Wellington which means that members get to play for free at each other’s course. “We have a number of things in the pipeline that will see our membership continue to grow and bring Wellington based members over the hill to play. That also means they’ll likely stay and enjoy everything else the Wairarapa has to offer” says Karen. She says the new facility has been made possible by a very supportive community, huge fund raising effort and community grants. “We have great support from local business and our incredible members who volunteer willingly to help make the club a better place for everyone. We’re really very lucky to be in such a great community.” Contact Mike 027 726 9610 roofing101ltd@yahoo.com New Roofs • Re Roofs • Extensions • Membrane Tile Roofing • Maintenance & Repairs Specialising in all roofing and cladding needs Glad to be involved with Martinborough Golf Club HOUSE SITES • DRIVEWAYS • SECTION CLEARING LANDSCAPING • TRACK MAINTENANCE • CARTAGE & SUPPLY OF METAL & LANDSCAPING PRODUCTS PLUS MORE Servicing the South Wairarapa Email: taylorandhawkins@hotmail.com | Phone: 027 696 3774 ELECTRICAL • FIRE ALARM BUILDING COMPLIANCE JOHN HUDSON E L E C T R I C A L 027 433 2125 LET ’S TALK . john@jhe.co.nz 5 Konini Street Masterton 06 377 0973 office@cer.nz www.cer.nz CALL US TODAY WE SPECIALIZE IN DOMESTIC AND COMMERCIAL ELECTRICAL SERVICES DOMESTIC & COMMERCIAL ELECTRICAL NETWORK CABLING HEAT PUMP INSTALLATION & MAINTENANCE COMMERCIAL KITCHEN & LAUNDRY EQUIPMENT Martinborough 37 Naples Street Phone: 06 306 5555 From the foundations to the fenceline you can get the whole job done with Mitre 10 Martinborough.
