COMMUNITY It’s been 15 years in the making but the Paekakariki Surf Club’s dream of new premises to house its life-saving volunteers and equipment is at last becoming a reality. The groundwork for the club’s new $5m premises was completed at the end of May by local contractor Mills Albert Ltd, and builder Homestead Construction aims to have the building closed in by Christmas. “It’s certainly been a long time coming,” says Paekakariki Surf Lifeguards Chairman Matt Warren who, with the club and the community, has shepherded the project through the past 15 years. The two-storey building with its 580m2 footprint will have downstairs storage space with a 5m stud to house the club’s rescue and competition craft, plus first-aid and community rooms for training. Upstairs will be the watch-tower, patrol management area and operations room, along with a large community space. “It’s been a complex task because the new building is on Crown Land and part of Queen Elizabeth Park, managed by the Greater Wellington Regional Council,” Matt says. “It’s also within the Kapiti Coast District Council and has been supported by local iwi Ngati Haumia and Ngati Toa. “What’s made it possible has been the commitment of the club and local community to supporting the club’s life-saving efforts: during the hundred years we’ve been operating we’ve saved well over 1000 people from life-threatening situations.” GAS, HEATING, DRAINAGE, CIVIL DRAINAGE & SEPTIC Ph (04) 233 8350 Mob 022 324 0865 Mana Plumbing is proud to be working with Paekakariki Surf Club ROCK SUPPLY/PLACEMENT Rock Supply/Placement | Civil Engineering | Drainage Earthmoving | Forestry Roading EROSION PROTECTION EARTHWORKS DRAINAGE FORESTRY ROADING
